The familiar story of the warworking wife whose hopeful waiting for her soidier-husband’s return is cut short by the receipt of a war department telegram is: told “Tender Comrade,” which opened at the Indiana theater yesterday. Although tender and poignant at times, the film loses much of its effectiveness in a few scenes and lines of obvious flag-waving. 3} After Chris (Robert Ryan) goes Rev. Howard J. black markets, whether or not war widows should date civilian admirers, and how the house should be run like a democracy, every= thing that could happen to women whose husbands are at war happens in the household. One of the husbands is reported missing at sea; another comes home on furlough, and Jo has her baby with Chris on his way overseas. Then Jo receives the telegram. The flags are unfurled again as she tells her young son that his father fought to give him “a better world to live in.” The performances of Ginger Rogers and Robert Ryan are good, and Ruth Hussey comes through with an amusing portrayal of the philandering war wife. The picture is produced by R-K-O Radio Pictures. (By Helen Ruegamer.)
