[Keith's Seal Apes Hitler|
Takes Spotlight on Bill But Shuns Interview.
Chilled and slightly miffed over the icy” welcome accorded him by the local weatherman, Sharkey. the {Seal turned a deaf ear today to in=terviewers seeking the secret of his success as star performer on Keith's vaudeville bill this week-end. “See my agent,” or utterances to that effect, barked Sharkey, as he snapped up a herring, yawned with boredom and plunged into his five-
|by-five portable pool.
“Undoubtedly, he's thinking that California was never like this,” ine terposed his manager and trainer, Mark Huling. “He's a native of Catalina Island. I don't believe he ever migrated as far as the Arctic circle . . . until, that is, he hit Indianapolis.”
Performs for President
Mr. Huling’s next remark brought his theatrical protege back to the surface of his salt-saturated pool faster than you can flip your flipper —er, uh, pardon me-—snap your finger. This was the statement that Sharkey had only recently shown off for President Roosevelt and the White House press corps. With a pompous grunt, Sharkey slithered out of the depths, perched on the edge of his pool, and tilted his head at a superior angle. Not that Sharkey can’t talk. On the contrary in the course of ~his act he imitates with considerable authenticity such characters as Adolf Hitler, Hirohito and M. G. M.s garrulous lion, who probably would be amazed at the thought of a seal “stealing his qft-repeated
Hitler's Mustache
In making like Hitler, Sharkey emits the most incomprehensible series of gutteral growls ever spoken from Keith's stage. And, better still, he has the mustache to match. Sharkey pictures Hirohito as a slinking, be-spectacled object yapping meaningless syllables in a falsetto voice. Always the actor, Sharkey doesn't mind human. congregations in the least, said Mr. Huling. In fact, he won't perform without an audience. Besides juggling balls, playing “When Irish Eyes Are Smiling” on a door-bell contraption and executing other typical maneuvers, Sharkey also is able, when the facilities are available, to perform “under control” in water, Mr. Huling reveals. He adds parenthetically that he’s the only seal in captivity willing to go to such unbelievable lengths to obtain the 10 pounds of fish rationed out to him daily,
Local Students on Bill
Also on Keith's program this week-end, are two Shortridge high school students, Joan and. Florence Izor, daughters of A. B. Izor, 353¢ N. Pennsylvania st. Their artistry on the double xylophones is definitely of professional quality. They said after the show that
, | they felt slightly mortified at mak-
ing their debut on a bill featuring a trained seal, but then reflected, “Well, he's. been in this business longer than we have.”— (By Sherley Uhl)
