Women Are Cited
Times Special NEW YORK, March 23.—Alexis Smith, who will be seen in Warner Brothers’ “The Adventures of Mark Twain,” has been nominated as the best dressed screen actress of the year. Ten awards were made by Emil Alvin Hartman, director of the fashion academy in New York, to women of various fields of endeavor and war work. Special awards were also made to women in the armed forces. Other winners include Bidu Sayao, Brazillian soprano now at the Metropolitan opera; Grace M. Austin, business, assistant treasurer of Schraffts; Mary Martin, stage; Penny Singleton, radio, and Cornelia Otis Skinner, author. Previous winners have been Rosalind Russell, Barbara Hutton, Lily Pons, Rise Stevens, Vera Zorina, Gertrude Lawrence and Congresswomen Clare Luce.
JUDY'S SENTIMENT AIDS PAPER DRIVE
HOLLYWOOD, March 23 (U. P.). Judy Garland, the song and dance star, has sent her sentiment off to war. The youthful Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer actress, who has saved—with autographs of every member of cast and crew—the scripts of all her 21 features and short subjects, dragged the whole lot from the closet and carted them to a near-by school as her contribution to the paper drive. First, though, she ripped off the autographed title pages—so she still would have something for sentiment and so souvenir-hunting pupils would not divert her collection from the war effort:

She finally recalls she got married, but to whom she doesn’t remember, Later she learns she’s going to have a baby, so she talks her 4-F boy friend, Norval Jones (Eddie Bracken), into proposing. Their attempted marriage, with Norval getting himself involved in forgery, a bank robbery, jail breaking, impersonating an army officer, all precede the blessed event. The two leads turn in good performances but hardly surpass those of Diana Lynn as Trudy's precoclous younger sister, and William

Jeffers, railroad magnate and former U. 8S. rubber czar. “We are in excellent bargaining position,” Jeffers said. “We no longer have to pay prices set by foreign ministers. We set the prices ourselves.” While admitting tire manufaeturing had so far been unsuccessful, he predicted they would eventually be able to make a heavy duty tire of synthetic rubber which would “stand up.” He pointed out 40 years were required to produce such a tire of crude rubber.
