call the leaflets “the Sunday funnies from Tokyo.” . . . Brilliantly colored, and printed on rough pulp paper, the messages usually are presented in crude cartoons and phrased in unique slang apparently written by some Jap who was educated in the United States about 20 years ago. . . . The “tickets to Tokyo” arouse anger as well as amusement when they attempt to stir dissention between Australian and American forces, or when they tell allied fighters they are losing their lives to serve the “selfish interests” of other nations. . . . The smiling, surrendering figure pictured above is accompanied by this message: “He got his food. He got his cigs. Above all, he's assured of life and the chance to get back home.”

After roll call Wallace considered the excuses offered by about 75 members of the special jury panel.
