Sheriffs Killed, Prisoner Unhurt
BATH, N. Y.,, March 10 (U. P)). Two Chemung county deputy sheriffs were returning with a prisoner from Buffalo late last night when their car crashed into a tree on the Buffalo-Bath highway. The prisoner, Thomas Dowd of Elmira, N. Y,, held on a children’s court charge, rushed to a nearby farmhouse to summon help for the injured officers and waited until authorities arrived. The deputies, Gordon Brinthaupt, 50, of Elmira, and Roy Hazen, 40, of Bath, were dead when an ambulance arrived. Dowd escaped injury.

OPPOSE VETO
Senator Would Over-ride Possible Adverse Action On Soldier Vote.
By DANIEL M. KIDNEY Times Staff Writer
WASHINGTON, March 10.—|§ Should President Roosevelt veto the |g soldier vote bill" compromise, Indiana’s new Democratic senator, Samuel D. Jackson, likely will vote to over-ride the veto he said today. He voted with the senate majority to over-ride the tax bill veto, despite his announced intention to |g support e administration when|g§ appoin to office’ by Governor |g Henry F, Schricker. E His reason for doing so was “be- |S cause some additional taxes is better than none” and a similar reason |£ will account for his stand on the |S soldier vote he asserted. E “I feel that the soldier vote com- |S promise is better than no bill asf = all,” he said. At the insistence of Senator Scott | Lucas (D. IIL), co-author of the § - Lucas-Green federal ballot bill, Senator Jackson hurried hete the & week-end after his predecessor, EB Senator Frederick VanNuys, was buried in order to support that measure. o, Demand Federal Ballot |S President Roosevelt's latest pro- = nouncement on the matter was E given at a press conference where = he said he favors. the kind of law which permits the greatest number of service men and women to vote with the least possible complications. In a message to congress on Jan. 26, the President demanded the federal ballot and speaking as “com-| = mander-in-chief” charged that the!Z so-called state rights substitute was “a fraud on the soldiers and sailors £ and marines. . ., It is a fraud upon = the American people. ” The compromise provides for a = limited use of the federal ballot i with state permission. |S Senator Raymond E. Willis (R.|E Ind.), who has favored the state = ballot from the start, probably will | vote to over-ride if the bill is vetoed. = Rep. Charles M. LaFollette; Evans-| E ville Republican, and Reps. Louis § E
den, Gary, Democrats, supported | 8 the federal ballot in the house. The = other eight Republicans fram Indiana were against it. All might vote to over-ride a veto, Mr. Madden £ was the only one who did not do so = on the tax bil. To
