PAGE 16 FRENCH STATUS DECISION ol DUE -
Stettinius wil Di iscus 5 De Gaulle Problem | With British, | By WILLIAM PHILIP SIMMS | Seripps-Howard Foreign Editor WASHINGTON, March 9.—Among| the items Under Secretary of State; Stettinius will discuss with the British when he arrives in London shortly will be the status of the French committee of national lib-| eration as the provisional govern-| ment of metropolitan France. This problem has been hanging | fire for some time. The British are | reported ready to extend recogni- | tion to the committee as the pro-|
visional government, but are wait- “1 ing on the United States.
U. 8. Not Hostile
The situation is the cause of considerable heart burning among the followers of Gen. Charles el Gaulle, committee president, and i certain circles in this country. Both White House. and state department have been accused of “reaction” and “hostility” to Gen. de Gaulle.! This view, it can be said with) confidence, is wholly beside the mark. Nowhere has France more well-wishers whose sincerity andj disinterestedness is above suspicion. In no world capital is there less concern regarding French personmalities, All Washington wants is the quickest and completest restoration of French democracy, national unity and power,
Not Always Democratic
This, and not “hostility” to any individual Frenchman, has been behind Washington’s hesitations. The empression has been inescapable that the Algiers committee has not always followed a truly democratic line. The person of Gen. de Gaulle has never entered into the picture. Only his methods have. Of late, however, relations be-| tween Washington and Algiers have ! seemed to improve. The general himself appears to be in a more reasonable frame of mind, It is thought likely, therefore, that Washington and London will soon reach an agreement with Algiers on a workable formula. That, certainly, is the administration's hope. Meanwhile, the chief concern here remains what it has been all along—that the 40,000,000 people of France shall not be hampered when they are free to set up a government of their own.

COUNTY RABBIT SHOW DATE SET
1500 Entries ies Anticipated at Fairgrounds Barns May 26-28. |
The little-known but highly-de- | veloped art of rabbitry will be shown off to its’ best advantage at 26-28 at the Indiana state fairgrounds saddle horse barns. At that time the uninitiated will! have their first opportunity to peer into the activities of the fast-grow-ing Marion County Rabbit Breeders Association, sponsor of the affair, Some 130 association members, whose enthusiasm for their hobby! is sharpened by certain pecuniary benefits, are grooming their choice | domestic specimens for the show, designed to impress the layman with the rabbit's role in the war| effort. Pelts for Service Garb
According to Robert Dodd, a show | committeeman for the breeders’ as-| sociation, and no mean fancier himself, rabbits, in addition to furnishing ration-free meat to war slim menus, have also provided -the armed services with thousands of pelts for fur-lined garments. The breeders group, says Mr. Dodd, has also been talking up the nutritional value of rabbit meat in the ‘better butcheries, with hopes of obtaining a wider distribution of their domestic-bred product: in these times of dietary stress. Dressed rabbit now sells under an OPA ceiling price of 55 cents a pound.
1500 Entries Expected
As far as Mr. Dodd knows, there aren't any large-scale rabbit ranches around Marion county, but there are enough “back yard” breeders to register approximately 1500 entries. for the local shindig. Entries, Mr. Dodd asserts, are also expected from throughout the Midwest and will be judged by experts from the American Rabbit and Cavy Breeders association, At present, Mr. Dodd and other | local breeders are struggling with the problem of soliciting sponsors willing to contribute awards inviting enough to attract the best rahbit stock in the Midwest. President of the association fis Larry Bivins, 2415 Stuart st.
