ARMY LISTS NEED OF STATE TOMATOES

George A. Turmail, field buyer for the army quartermaster corps, estimated today that the armed forces would require 8,000,000 cases of No. 2 tomatoes from Indiana's 1944 pack. Turmail said that requirements might go as high as 70 per cent of the 1944 pack. He estimated the 1944 need at 95,000 acres of -contracted tomatoes and 20,000 open acres. Requirements of 1944 commercial vegetables and methods of obtaining necessary acreage for processing were discussed at a meeting of representatives of the U. 8. department of agriculture war board, vegetable processors and army officials. L. M. Vogler, Indiana AAA chairman, said meetings were planned at Elwood March 9 and Marion March 10 to urge upon farmers the importance ‘of growing contracted tomato -acreage. He said other meetings would be held over the state on requirements for commercial vegetable acreage.
