TRAFFIC DEATHS RISE 30%, COUNCIL SAYS'

GHICAGO, March 1 (U. P)—

A total of 2330 highway deaths occured in January, compared to 1790 for the same month in 1943, the council reported, and similar increases were recorded in- October, “November and December.

20 (Delayed) .—The ideal way to observe a battle is from the command bridge of a navy ship pulled close in shore. - From there, with good binoculars, every detail of combat can be seen with startling clarity. Today I was lucky enough to have such an unusual opportunity. I watched soldiers, marines, tanks, flamethrowers and planes take over Eniwetok island from the center to its easternmost tip, annihilating the Jap defenders to the last man. The bombardment was started by a destroyer, firing along the level rays of a powerful searchlight. Each salvo of incandescent tracers passed by us like meteors, struck the low coral beach and exploded under our noses.

The thousands of men on the decks could see the bombs drop. Time and again the cry of “she’s on the way” could be heard while eyes followed the downward flight of the 500-opunders. Our binoculars brought the explosions so close we uncohsciously ducked as the debris flew up, scattered and began a slow descent. Behind the bombers: came the strafing planes, small at considerable altitude, then growing in size as they dove at a steep angle toward the rapidly fraying line of palm trees before us.
