Claim Questionable Again, the longer a rocket’s range the greatér the proportion of its weight that will have to be devoted to propulsive charge, and hencé the 1ess explosive it will be able to carry for demolition purposes. The claim that one of the reputed 12-ton German rockets would blast flat an area of 20 square miles is questionable. That would lay out a “block” four miles wide and five miles long for such a super-block-buster to “bust.” The two tons of a present-day British blockbuster are supposed to flat ten the buildings in a city block. The difference in area between that and 20 square miles would seem just a bit too much even for a superrace's super-bomb. Talk of weapons of this kind.is in itself at least a partial confession of defeat. It is an admission that the luftwaffe has no hope of renewing effective bombings of British cite ies, that the U-boats have failed in their starvation-blockade mission, that the German general staff has no hope of landing troops on Dover beach. One thing must be watched for, however—that is, it must be watched for if Germans are capable of learning any lessons from military history. Previously, “secret” and “surprise” weapons, like gas and tanks in the first world war, have had only limited effects because their first uses were in insufficient quantities.
