BY JANE LEWIS

INDIANAPOLIS HOUSEWIVES have declared war, The enemy is home accidents— the cause of more than 30,000 deaths in this country last year. The first battle was staged this

| morning when 8000 women, armed | with pencils

and home safety charls, made a complete check on

| their homes from attic to base-

ment in search of home hazards. The campaign is a part of thé reduce-accidents program in the home safety engineering contest sponsored by the safety division of the Indianapolis Chamber o Commerce. “ The contest army is composed of representatives of 177 women's

organizations, each with its own general--a contest chairman. - » » ~ THE RULES OF the contest are simple. Each woman checks her home against the chart for such hazards as stairs in poor condition, small “skiddy” rugs or furniture that invites stumbling. There are 40 questions in all, At the close of the contest in April, the women will check their homes again to note-any improvements. If an accident—one that requires the physician's attention or results in loss of time from a regular occupation—occurs during this period, it must be reported to the contest chairman and her score will be decreased accordingly.

THE LOCAL CONTEST is the first of its kind and since the origin of the idea it has heen adopted by safety councils in two other cities. Impetus was given to the drive by the fact that, in addition to the fatality toll last year, it is estimated home accidents injured 4,500,000 persons and in the first six months of 1943 such accidents had increased 4 per cent,

» » »n THERE WERE 1129 home accident fatalities in Indiana alone last year, 327 of which were in Indianapolis. The major percentage is attributed to falls with burns claiming second place. Local hospitals report treatment of more home than trafic inJuries,

2 j= Final contest reports will be’ judged first by the contest committee composed of 15 members representing local service organizations and then by a committee of three judges who will be announced later, The awards—two $25 war bonds —will be presented at a banquet in May. One will go to a group having more than 75 members

and one to an organization con-

taining less than 75 members. Individuals records will receive certificates of merit. But the ultimate goal in the war on hazards is more than the contest awards; it is the lessening

of casualties on the home front.
