are girls who live the life you de- - scribe,

DEAR ‘JANE JORDAN—I am one of several eastern girls who have

college. We've chosen a small we thought would be moderate and easy-going. We were all surprised to learn how standards differ here from the East. Always you hear that the East is “fast,” but the small middle-west-ern towns have beaten New York and Washington to the draw. The girls here are completely grown up and sophisticated. Already they go to night clubs, date ‘boys seven or:eight years older than themselves and expect gifts from the fellows ranging anyway from five to 50 dollars. They're at home in formals, “heels and hats, they know all about the men and are used to staying out until’ two or three o'clock in the morning. Our parents ‘would certainly obJect to our being out past 12 or one o'clock. We went to a show or bowling and then to the housé of one of the gang where we sang songs, played games or just talked. When a date cost more than a dollar it was expensive, I've had fun on 25 cents. We went to the z00, we walked, we even swung in the parks and expensive presents were unheard of. I'm-amazed! I thought the East was fast and radical but we from the coast seem to be a bunch of’ conservatives. My question is: Which of us is right, we simple easterners or these sophisticated middle-westerners? COSY. » » ” Answer — You have the typical easterner’s view of the Middle West |

as a quiet little woods, perhaps in-

habited by Indians, where people | live simply in the Early American manner. No worider you are amazed

to find that our girls read the New | &

Yorker, Esquire and Vogue and try | to out-do the East in sophistion- | tion. However, I do not agree with your

tion of the country where all girls go to the zoo and swing in the parks for entertainment. There are communities there where the girls travel | at just as swift a pace and grow up | as rapidly as your school mates. | Likewise, in the Middle West, there | are communities where people live

Right here in Indianapolis there

and if they care to write, they will tell. you so.- East, west,| north and south, there are sophisti- |

~ cated and unsophisticated groups.

It all depends on which group you choose. In a school of any size you are bound to find all types. ut don’t think you can label such |

groups right or wrong. In a country -

as free as ours young people simply follow their own tastes. (As a conservative parent may prefer the! simple life for my young but if they |

' do not prefer it I wouldn't call them '

wrong. Certainly it has been a long | time since we had any dollar dates | ending at midnight in our family, but I will remain unruffied as- long} as the children are not drunk, dis-| orderly, anti-social, idle or unhappy. | I would hestiate to call them 5 wrong. Likewise I would hesitate to eall you wrong. The fact that you differ is not-cause for condemnation’|

on either side.
