The truth probably is that the greatest danger of profound shocks to our economy ‘will follow Germany's surrender rather than the final defeat of Japan. Already, as Mr. Bymes indicated, revisions in war strategy arg bringing certain changes—big changes, thought not yet greatly important in their effect on employment. A number of small-arms ammunition plants and some others have been closed, turning away some tens
ruptly, However, most of the plants affected have other war contracts and in most places it's still easy for workers to find jobs.
Surpluses Expected
But tremendous revisions of strategy will follow Germany's collapse. war with Japan may be long and hard, but it surely won't {call for.an American army of énything like the present size, or for| munitions production on anything like the present scale. Some au-| thorities, indeed, believe that peace! in Europe. may find surpluses of many war goods. oy So the defeat of Germany is likely | § to mean heavy demobilization of} soldiers, heavy cancellation of war contracts, and an end to war jobs for millions of people who will want other jobs.
