4HIS was their introduction to a new kind of bolt from the blue, TT out of the clouds one morning four American Thundetbolts blasted into 32 Japanese fighters. Under the impact of the first of these, six enemy fighters were shattered like clay pigeons. In all, ten were downed before the others scattered in the clouds.
Backing up the skill and daring of those four American fliers that morning was one of the most formidable airplanes of this war

advances in modern aviation research.
One interesting part of this research story is that of the pro-
peller. For today’s high-performance airplane must literally “hang
by its prop,” in the grueling test of combat flying, under the most
extreme changes in speed and temperature.
