‘Capital Capers’ Swindle Has Washington Blushing
WASHINGTON, Nov. 10 (U. P.).— The capital today was the victim of the most successfull swindle since the last “sale” of the Washington Monument to a sightseer. A “short, dark-haired man” registered ‘at the new Statler hotel a week ago, took a fancy suite, and
announced that he was advance agent for a new Warner Brothers picture, “Capital Capers,” to be filmed here. Bette Davis, John Garfield and Pat O'Brien were to play the leading roles. More than one credulous Wash ingtonian is blushing now that the true story is revealed. Their pocket

40% of 1943 Deaths Ocour
Ansluly, August and September.
Don PF. Stiver, Indiana state police superintendent, said today that 40 per cent of all Indiana traffic fatalities the first nine months of 1943 occurred. in July, August and September and he urged Hoosiers to help prevent a further upswing in the accident rate. ; The per cent of increase in fatalities during the three months was greater than for the same period during the preceding two years, Stiver sald. Ca _.For. the nine months, 476 per« sons were killed in 17077 accidents,
“Two hundred -seventysthree-
died In 5196 rural accidents and 203 deaths resulted from 12,081
Motorists Negligeat
“While the state traflic toll represents a 41 per cent reduction in fatalities in comparison with the first nine months of 1942, the fact that almost half the total came in the last three months of the period indicates that Indiana has a traflic problem,” Stiver said. He added that reduced vehicular traffic has made motorists negligent in keeping their autos in repair and in observing traffic regulations. Pedestrian-auto accidents killed 159 during the nine-month period
{and led all other causes.
Stiver sald counties reporting no traffic deaths were Crawford, Harrison, Orange, Ohio, Parke, Scott; Switzerland, Union and White.
