$12 and increases from $10 to $20 the allowance for each additional child, The wife's allowance remains the same, $50. Final senate approval came when N Senator Ed C. Johnson called up the bill and asked that it be accepted immediately in view of the fact that the senate already had voted for the new scales it contained. The voice vote sending the measure to the White House followed with no further discussion. House passage of the allotment bill did not affect its consideration of the senate-approved draft deferment measure, one section of which carried the same dependency allotment provsions.” A house military affairs committee is rewriting the deferment bill and it may be some time before the new version is reported to the house floor.
Recommendations Upped
In accepting the senate allowances scale, the house upped its full committee recommendations of $25 for the first child, $20 for the second, and $15 for the third The senate scale was matched when the house supported Rep. Charles R..Clason, (R..Mass.), against Mili=
tary Affairs Committee Chairman '
Andrew J May, (D. Ky), who urged “discretion” in boosting the rates, ; Present allowances are $12 for the first child and $10 for each additional child. The $50 allowance for a wife only was not changed.
RESTAURANT SUGAR ALLOTMENTS RAISED
NEW YORK, Oct. 20 (U. P.).—A New York state restaurant association bulletin disclosed today that the office of price administration had increased sugar allotments to restaurants by 25 per cent effective Nov. 1. The OPA made no public announcement of the” increase and restaurant men said the silence apparently was because of a desire to avoid pressure from other groups, such as candy and soft-drink manufacturers, for greater allotments.
