CHICAGO, : Oct." 19. — Danny O'Neil, formerly of the aircraft car rier Lexington, became a radio singer, but he also joined the union, and that, he said, is where his troubles began, “It's not that I blame thé union,” he hastened to add, “but it’s just
One “end,” he said, is the Great Lakes naval training station, which wants Danny to ‘be a soloist in & privately-sponsored weekly program. The other is the American Federation of Radio Artists, which refuses to sanction the show because the 50 sailor participants are not union members.
Got Medical Discharge
It all began, Danny said, when he broke his back in a fall from the Lexingion in 1041, Three days before Pearl Harbor, he got his medical discharge from the navy. A year earlier while Danny wa training at Great Lakes, Chaplain Hjalmar Hanson picked him as tenor soloist for the station's choir. After Danny's discharge from the navy, Hanson arranged an audition that landed him a contract with Columbia Broadcasting System.

Then the A. F. of L. union ordered Danny, an announcer and a clvilian actor to leave the show, A union spokesman said the order was prompted by the presence of the sailors—non-union members—
The union made a concession few days later and agreed -tothe show go on one more Sunday. But it said some sort of “arrangement” would have to be worked out for the rest of the series. C. B. 8. officials said they were stumped. They acknowledged that the the company's contract with the union calls for a closed shop. Danny said he was torn between union loyalty and his love for the navy, But he said he thought the show was too important to be stopped.
