REPORT ROLLAND DEAD | LONDON, Oct. 19 (U. P.).—~Radio { Berlin, quoting Paris newspapers, | has reported the death of Romain { Rolland, French author and Nobel prize winner in 1916, Rolland, who {held strongly internationalist and | pacifist views, reportedly clashed recently with German occupation authorities. He was 'best known for his novel Jean-Christophe,

Evanston ave. residents, who was not present at last night's meeting, sald he would recommend that the proposal be appealed to Marion circuit court. : Councilmen Willie B. Sullivan an Otto Worley stumped for the annexation measure on grounds that property-owners of the affected district already are receiving benefits from practically all city services, Works Board President Harmon Campbell said it was “vitally necessary” to bring the east side of the street within city boundaries preparatory to construction of a sewer under the thoroughfare.

Voices Objection

Mr. Gregg voiced objection to this theory this morning pointing out that east side residents of Evanston

| ave. had expressed their willingness

to pay their share of the sewer costs if excused from the annexation responsibilities, : Inclusion of the district within the city limits will boost the tax rate there from $1.10 a $100 valuation to $2.80. The west side of Evanston is already inside the Indianapolis corporate limits, Irked by the councils rapid-fire action, Mr. Gregg declared that he had been “assured that the vote on

this measure would be delayed for|M

“urther study.” He pointed out also

that if the annexation is premanant, school children living on the east side of Evanston ave. will be obliged to transfer from the John T.

school, within the city limits, Exponents of the annexation last night were ready to institute a general expansion of the Indianapolis corporate limits, with Councilman Otto Worley favoring inclusjon of Woodruff place within the city, “if someone would introd such an ordinance.” : a a re A council wrangle preceded passage of an appropriation ordinance increasing the pay of sanitation engineers at - the city hospital. Councilman Ed Kearling challenged the measure because, he contended, “the little fellow rieeds these salary raises more than the technicians.” Under the proposal, salaries of hospital engineers would be hiked from $1700 a year to $2100 a year. " “We'll see about those little fellows next year,” exclaimed Councilman Kealing. “We will if your voice hold out,” Councilman Willie Sullivan jocularly countered.

Praises Women As Fighter Pilots

COLUMBIA, Mo, Oct. 19 (U. P)~Women would make excellent combat pilots, Maj. Alexander P. De Seversky last night told 2000 Stephens college women. “We don't want to see women in combat,” the author of “Vice tory Through Air Power” said, “but if it should come to that, they would make excellent come bat pilots. “They would be better as combat pilots than in other active branches of the service because in the air there would be less sense of blood and suffering but rather only that of loss of the machine.” De Seversky said that women were well suited to aviation because flying does not require a great physical effort. Women, be-

| cause they better follow a pre-

scribed routine than do men, he added, would make better comba pilots.’ —
