. Felt Proud and Humble

Nearly every type of fighting ship! seemed to be represented. Lumps came into my throat and into those of all of us on the little convoy.! ~ Most of us were hardboiled South Pacific veterans. But as our asfon-|] ished eyes saw this task force, we felt proud, humble and thrilled. | I could not help thinking of my friends in the LST's (landing ship tanks) of the South Pacific amphib- | fous force. This sight would have been a treit for ‘those gallant; youngsters who up to now have been | carrying the burden of the war at sea with small assistance from such ships as these. Niglit after night, | they have gone “up the slot” with, precious cargoes for the sustenance of our fighting men in the northern Solomons, braving repeated attacks, from Jap subs and dive-bombers, | usually with the smallest of naval escorts or no escorts at-all, This does not mean that our South Pacific fighters have been de- | nuded of naval protection in order to make up these huge raiding task forces.
