Inventor Given Legion of Merit

ALLIED HEADQUARTERS, Southwest Pacific, Oct. 4 (U. P), —Cien. Douglas MacArthur today awarded the Legion of Merit to Lt. Col. John R. Dickson, San Francisco, for his invention of a bomb fuse which contributed to the allied victory in the Bismarck sea battle early this year, Dickson, an ordnance officer of the 5th U. 8. air force, perfected the fuse only 48 hours before the battle, in“which allied planes sank every ship in a 22-ship Japanese convoy. The fuse enabled the fliers to attack from extremely low altitude. Dickson made it out of simple field equipment. , (Although. the dispatch from MacArthur's headquarters did not say so, it was presumed that the fuse had to do with the skipbombing technique which received its first major tryout in the Bismark sea battle.)
