Lives in Blast at Harlan, Ky.

HARLAN, Ky., Sept. 17 (U. P).— Rescuers today dug from earth and

perished in a coal mine explosion, but six others, saved by their own ingenuity, walked out alive, The six rescued men were brought out of the mine shortly after midnight, when rescuers found the bodies of three others nearby. The six had been trapped for 12 hours, but they had erected a barricade which protected them from poisonous gas fumes. Several hours later, rescuers working in relays and hampered ‘by the gas, unearthed the bodies of the other nine, Officials of the Three

had been accounted for. The hero of the little band of entombed men was Shelley Farley, 43; who led them in prayer and conceived the barricade, which shut the men off in a corner of the mine shaft. The barricade was construct ed hastily out of old mine ties, boards, clothing and debris. It kept poisorious gases from penetrating into. the enclosed space, which was filled with good air,

Farley Takes Over

‘after the blast. He ordered - the men not to smoke and set. up a rationing system to conserve their meager water supply. They passed the time praying and guessing the time they would be rescued. Farley missed the time by five minutes. He guessed 10 p. m., and fellow miners reached them at 10:05 last night. As the six men walked from the mine entrance two hours later, Farley said: “We have to fgce Our Maker some time—and we faced Him tonight.” Two hundred rescuers, working in relays, dug through debris and earth that filled the shaft. They were. hampered by a lack of oxygen and were forced to wear gas masks.
