WHEN WINTER comes, coughs and colds won't be ter behind.

The OPA is getting ready for them with an extra allotment of 1

talked of subsidies costing $1,500,000,000 to $2,000,000,000. Some of the wide breach that separated the administration and farm organization heads a few months ago appeared to have been closed by thie conference. One farm leader remarked afterward: “I've got my fingers crossed,” intimating that he wasn't sure what ‘Mr. Roosevelt meant by consumer subsidies. Si ———————

United States alone, influenza caused 550,000 deaths, Since that terrible year, the world has been waiting for a recurrence of the disease, whieh has turned up again andagain in cycles of 20 years or so, but § never with the intensity of the 1910 onslaught, Since the last great epidemic, influenza has

{ been recognized as due to a filter-

able virus. The recognition of viruses is a matter of fairly recent medical history, and although it is possible to isolate and recognize the viruses with accuracy, there remains much to learn of their properties and action. They ap-

mental, not ‘quite organic, not quite inorganic. Viruses are responsible for a long list of dis eases, Including measles, infan- | tile paralysis, smallpox and the common cold.

ears—the virus of influenza was finally isolated, and ferrets infected, which reinfected human under laboratory conditions. Making a successful vaccine proved a stumbling-block, however, when conducted along the logical lines of using ferrets which had recovered from the disease.

By accident, in developing a vacCine for dog distemper, two vet-

erinarians tripped upon the answer a year later, when they discovered that some ferrets just recovering from 'flu were immune

to the distemper virus. But since dog distemper is strictly canine, the clew meant nothing.

Vaccine Tests As late as 1039, in the 1ith hour of the last 20-year cycle period, American scientists in England found that a group of ferrets recovering from ‘flu were immune made from ferrets dead of dise temper epidemic. In addition, ferrets vaccinated with distemper vaccine proved immune to ‘flu, The final step was to inoculate human beings with a mixed vaccine of distemper and ‘flu, and this procedure was undertaken at once with equivocal results, Both In Europe and America, the new vaccine is being put to the test wherever "flu breaks out, Nobody knows exactly what the dog distemper does to the ‘flu virus. World war II is surely not lacking in famine, violence, and pestilence—but its outlook as far as influenza is concerned is cone siderably brighter than it was. It is to be hoped that when the vaccine is properly improved and developed, it will obvicate any further world-wide epidemics. VARIN JOINS BUTLER STAFF Miss Carolyn.
