Distillers Prevented From’

Producing More Gin, Whisky This Year.

WASHINGTON, Sept. 16 (U. P). -—Prospect of a further cut in supplies of whiskey and gin arose today following a war production board decision denying permission to the distilled spirits industry to} produce beverage alcohol for the remainder of 1043. The industry has been producing industrial alcohol solely since October, 1942, under WPB orders. While industry sokesmen main that they had asked no concessions, there has been agitation for a brief “holiday” ‘so that the distillers could replenish dwindling stocks. Large distillers now are giving distributors only about 50 per cent of the. supplies avallable to them in 1942 in a move to make existing stocks last as long as possible. It is estimated that the present rate of consumption, current stocks will be exhausted in less than three years, ‘Holiday’ Impossible A spokesman for WPB Chairman Donald M. Nelson said that growing wartime demands for industrial alécohol and the need of increasing the present stockpile of the commodity made it impossible to grant the industry even a brief “holiday.” Before Nelson made the decision, “the general impression had been that | War Food Administrator Marvin | Jones would decide whether corn! and other grains could .be spared for making beverage alcohol, Because of the tight situation in grains for use as feed, some experts have believed right along that the government would not try to justify diversion of grains for distillation’ of spirits. A’ WPB spokesman insisted that | Nelson made the decision, however, and stated furthermore that no as-| surance has been given the Industry that a “holiday” is possible early, in 1044. |

PITTSBURGH. — War-necessary | sulfur can be salvaged from choking gas now wasted up the chimneys of | factories, oil refineries, and smelters, and turned from an irritating nis-1

The process whereby this is ace complished was described before the

American Chemical sociely meeting | here by T. F. Doumani, R. F. Deery and W. E. Bradley of the Union on Co. of California, The waste gas is sulfur dioxide, the same suffocating fumes you smell’ when: & sulfur candle is; “burned. + It is ‘an inevitable by-| product -of the refining of many types of crude dil, the burning of| certain kinds of soft coal and the | roasting of ores. In the new process this gas is passed over a catalyst at moderately high temperatures with the addition of hydrogen. The hydrogen takes oxygen away from the sulfur dioxide to form water which comes off as steam. The sulfur comes off in pure form ready for use in vulcanizing rubber or other industrial tasks,
