Amendment Calls ‘Equal Rights’ Proposal Frivolous

Times Special

WASHINGTON, Aug. 26.—A declaration that any further “equal-

tution is unnecessary and inappropriate is contained in a statement issued today on the 23d anniversary of women suffrage by Miss Marguerite M. Wells, president of the National League of Women Voters. In referring to the pending equal rights amendment, calling for equality of rights for men and women, Miss Wells also said that it was a “frivolous demand upon the attention of a congress concerned with the fate of this country and the world.”

“Twenty-three years ago today,”||

Miss Wells’ statement said, “occurred the greatest single addition to a democratic electorate ever

made—the enfranchisement of the |

women of the United States. On that date the ‘equal rights amendment’ officially was proclaimed to be a part of the constitution.”

‘Uunecessary, Frivolous’

“The amendment now’ proposed,” she continues, “can add nothing to the opportunity of equal citizenship given women in the 19th amendment. [ts introduction makes .an unnecessary and frivolous demand: upon the attention of congress. . . . If proposes to clutter up the constitution ° with an unnecessary

years after women have won equal-

“Any recognition women wish to earn, they may now achieve through their equal rights as citizens as provided in the 19th amendment. “The patriotism with which American women now are serving their country is belittled, not honored, by a proposal to toss women a bouquet in a form of an unneces-

to the constitution.”
