new film, “Above Suspicion,” which opened at the theater yesterday. It’s based on Helen Maclnnes’ novel of the same name. Joan Crawford returns to the screen after an absence of two years (she was last seen in “The Woman's Face”) to play the heroine and bride of Fred MacMurray, American professor at Oxford, in this dra of undercover agents. In thé way of a story, the newlyweds are approached by ‘a member of the British foreign office, who. asks them to locate a. missing British agent while they are honey-

mooning on the continent. By all the tricks available in the field of espionage, they follow the trail from Paris to the home of a Dr. Mespelbrunn (Reginald Owen). Rathbone Is Villian
Once there, they are confronted by MacMurray’s Oxford classmate, Basil Rathbone, the villain in the flicker. Deciding two and two add up to a Nazi agent, the couple leaves after contacting the imprisoned doctor. Later MacMurray returns to free him with the aid of Conrad Veidt, Austrian agent. As in most spy films, the Nazis stage a big chase and the pursued disguise themselves. The villain gets his just desserts and his intended . victims escape with mission accomplished after a thrilling climax. The pattern is almost threadbare after two years of war films, but Director Richard Thorpe saves the film by making the most out of suspense. The unique methods by which the young couple is guided to its destination are diverting. They leave the customer wondering what authors won’t think of ‘next. Stars Remain Selves
Miss Crawford and Mr. MacMurray give some credence to their roles, but for some reason or other remain Miss Crawford and Mr. MacMurray... Maybe it’s because their own personalities have been so well publicized. Incidentally, “Above Suspicion” was Mr. MacMurray's first appearance for M. G. M. and Miss Crawford's last after an 18-year association with that studio. It's fun to watch the screen's Sherlock Holmes play the villain for a change and to.see Conrad Veidt as a sympathetic character. ” ” ” Joan Davis saves the day for. “Two Senoritas from Chicago,” Loew’s second feature. Her antics as a theatrical agent for Jinx Falkenburg and Ann Savage are as funny as ever. The two girls pass themselves off as Portuguese stars to get a break on Broadway and end up in jail with their agent. It’s an implausible, but fast moving
comedy.

ACUTE SHORTAGE OF PULPWOOD FEARED
MURRAY BAY, Que, Aug. 20 (U., P.).—A shortage of pulpwood amounting to 3,750,000 cords in the United States and Canada, which would force a 30 per cent cut in the amount of newsprint available for newspapers, books and magazines,
was seen as a possibility today by members of a special house subcommittee investigating: the newsprint supply. Increased demand for paper in other fields because of. the war was emphasized by ‘Representative Clarence J. Brown (R. O.); a member of the committee. “War has increased the demand for paper,” he said, not only for direct purposes but to replace .eritical metals like steel‘'and tin. The use of glass, another substitute, has made necessary greater: amounts of paper for packing. i “Some glass mahufacturers have informed the committee -that “the situation may prove disastrous and force plant closings. The "pulpwood shortage, as with ‘other paper, is the factor, for new wood must be used in containers to hold together reprocessed paper in boxboard and shipping containers.’

The maestro’s band within a band, the “Wreckin’ Crew,” gives out with an old tune, “Betty Lou,” with the audience lending a glapping support. Vocalist Jimmy Connelly does two ballad-type songs, “All or. Nothing at All” and “In the Blue of Evening.” He also joins Betty Martin, the girl singer, in “Slender, Tender and Tall.” Her solos are “Let's Shuffle Off to Buffalo” and “You'll Never Know.” Acrobatics * Clever The Five Taylorettes, a group of youngsters with a clever acrobatic act, prove themselves unusual troopers. Flips and pyramids are their specialties.. The two smallest ones, a boy and girl about 5 and 7, practically steal the act when .they work together. Smoothest of the acts offered is the performance of Burns and White, singers and dancers. Their novelty number and encore, “Little Nell,” is good comedy, well executed. In addition their routines are polished and their voices pleasing. Completing the show are Joe Mosely, who plays the difficult “Flight of the Bumblebee” on a miniature trumpet, and Delano Dell, fast talking gagster whom the audience seemed to like. To sum it up, the program is a well-rounded one. 8 ” ” - The screen fare at Keith's this week is “No Place for a Lady,” featuring Margaret Lindsay and William Gargan. It's a mystery film with the two stars playing detective to track down a murderer and uncover a black market.—V. H,
