A. F. L. COOL TO HELP ON LAWS

Plans to ‘Go It Alone’ in Any Change Regulating

Unions.

By FRED W. PERKINS Times Special Writer

CHICAGO, Aug. 13.—The American Federation of Labor, William Green said today, rejects suggestions that it co-operate with groups that are working toward so-called “sensible” national laws for regula-

| tion of labor unions.

Thus the A. .F. of L. president, spokesman for the federation’s executive council in session here, scouted predictions that if organized labor groups did not consent to some form of legislative control, the result was likely to he more repressive laws to supplement the new war labor disputes (ConnallySmith. act). The A. F. of L. attitude is regarded as one sign of the federation's confidence in its present and future power, based on the fact that despite the three-way split in the labor movement its membership under war conditions has been boosted to an all-time high of more then six million. Other symptoms of the same confidence were the execytive council’s turndown of John L. Lewis’ bid for immediate reaffiliation of the United Mine Workers, and its refusal to enter into a scheme of joint pelitieal action with the C, I. O.

‘Burned’ Before The latter action followed overtures from Sidney Hillman, chairman of the C. I. O.’s political action committee, and constituted a notice

P. of L. felt competent to “go it alone.” The reunion movement between them is very weak at present, and A. F. of L. statements indicate it can be revived only by virtual capitulation of the C. 1. got their fingers burned threyugh Joining up several years ago with Laber’s Nen-Partisan League, which was founded as the political division of the C.I1.0. when John Lewis was C. I. O. president. The league took some courses in oppesition to interests of the A. F. of L. contributors. ; The league still exists, with John T. Jones, a Lewis lieutenant, in charge, but at present its financial support comes entirely from the United Mine Workers—and that organization has had an unhappy legislative history in recent months.

C. I. O. Favors FDR The A. F. of L. policy, as reiter-
