GREAT AT FUTURE

During War.

' . KIRKSVILLE, Mo., Aug. 13 (U. i P.).—Senator Harry S. Truman (D. “{ Mo.) looked into the world of the future today and predicted for ‘Americans uuprecedented prosperity, comfort and happiness—“if we are equal to the task of utilizing ‘what we have.” . In an address prepared for delivery to the graduating class of Northeast Missouri State Teachers = college, Truman, who is chairman & of the senate committee investigat- " ing the war effort; promised that * wartime technological developments would make such a future possible. ~ But he warned that it hinged om: 1. Allowing private © business .- and initiative a chance to work and produce. 2. Intelligent, far-sighted union leadership, ready to sacrifice small advantages to obtain great . gains for the people in general. 3. Government assistance for private business and provision for a sound framework within which the economy can function. 4. Securing for all men every- + Where their basic human rights.

A Few Examples

‘¥ Truman cited a few examples of « what the future holds: * Automobiles—“Henry Kaiser has “designed a completely new automo- " bile, a lightweight car with a rear- * engine drive, using the new miracle '100-octane gasoline, requiring less £ man-hours to build, which he hopes «to sell—through gas stations—for , about $400.”

‘Plane Engines for $100°

Helicopters—“Igor Sikorsky has # shown the committee the performance of which helicopters are cap“able. The first one cost $260,000 +.but vastly: better ones will be built "and sold commercially, within a few short years, for less than $2000. “The day is not far distant when an airplane engine, { Weiebing less than 100 pounds and capable of producing 100 horse- § power, which would be ample for a Zsmall private plane, will be proyduced in mass quantities for $100

each.” Housing Needed

Television— Television is on the threshhold of great development. It is true that there are many technical and commercial difficulties which must still be overcome. But ythe day cannot be far away when four homes, schools, offices and “automobiles will be equipped with television sets.” Housing—“Our big cities, like . New York, Chicago and Detroit, all have blighted areas of tenement houses, the continuance of which would be a public disgrace. New materials or old materials for new

. ' 5 1 3% i i

plywood and special pre-fabricated articles will be used, as a result of * which "it would be possible to build a house with many hours less of labor and a house which will be insulated—cooler in the summer and easier to heat in the winter.” Food Changes Due = Railroads—“Probably instead of "having Pullman and coach classes, _ the railroads will have three or four «classes. The first class will con- _ sist of equipment with all bedrooms, ' many of which will even have showers. The second class will consist of the present Pullman lower and upper berth. The third class may well be triple-deck cheap coach sleepers. The fourth class will be new coaches with reclining seats of des most modern type that can be ethers will | also be great Smprovements in ‘the packaging, storing and selling of vegetables, fruits and meats. Deep freezers will be just as common in the home of “the future as the electric refrigera«tor is in the present home.”
