HELD IN SWEDEN
After Norway Raid, They Live on Pretty Estate.
Copyright, 1943. by The Indianapolis Times “and The Chicago Daily News, Inc.
LONDON, Aug. 12.—All 10 Amer-
force-landed in Sweden, following
the U. 8. 8th air force raid against German installations in Norway, on July 24, are well and “being treated like kings,” a traveler with firsthand information from that country declared. These four officers and six non-
the “stockade” which is, in reality, a large estate located in one of the prettiest spots in Sweden. They have shed their army flying togs for civilian clothes.
To Visit Stockholm
Swedish regulations permit them considerable freedom of movement and arrangements are being made for them to visit Stockholm at intervals—on their own responsibility. At present, they are permitted to leave the “stockade” during the day but they must return in the evening. “It is harder to get back inside the gates at night than it is to get out,” théy have told American vistors. Swedish permission to the American airmen to visit Stockholm for furloughs from interment routine follows the granting of similar privileges to Canadian airmen forced to land over the frontier in neutral Sweden.
RED CROSS CONFIRMS DEATH OF REPORTER
GENEVA, Aug. 12° (U. P.).—The International Red Cross confirmed today that Robert P. Post, London corresponéent of the New York Times, had been killed when an American heavy bomber was shot down near Oldenburg, Germany, last Feb. 26. The Red! Cross said that two crew members of the homber in which .Post was riding during a raid on Wilhelmshaven had been blown out of the plane when it exploded in the air. They were 2d Lt. W. H. Gotke and Sgt. J. ‘Miffin. German authorities revealed that the bodies of Post and nine others - were found in the homber. Post, 32 years old, had been a newspaperman for 10 vears. He was one of eight American correspondents who trained in Britain to go on bombing missions of the 8th U. 8. air force. The Red Cross report was the first definite word of his fate and that of the crew, Those on other planes in the raid saw the bomber in trouble and thought that some of its uccupants had parachuted.
1500 SOLDIERS JOIN COURSES EACH WEEK
LONDON; Aug. 12 (U. P.).—Brig. Gen. Frederick Osborn, director .of the special services division of the U. S. war department, revealed today American troops were enrolling in army correspondence courses at the rate of 1500 a week and that enrollment should total 100,000 by November. He said that 1400 men were studying such courses on Guadalcanal during the battle for that island and that another 1200 were studying in the Aleutians. Osborn came here. to study British educational and discussion methods which he said at a press conference were “ahead of ours.”
