nis for golf until he was 35. The royal and ancient in America was in swaddling clothes when the compactly built, dark-come~ plexioned, taciturn, bearded Walt= er Travis decided that cow pasture pool was his dish. Travis walked with a suggestion of a stoop, which was accentuated whin the excitement of a close match seemed to be getting the better of him. He was never without a long black cigar which never appeared to "diminish in length. Travis. was self-taught. He was on the weak side as a hitter, but

his play around the greens was °

uncanny. He early developed a putting touch that at once was the envy and scourge of tournament golf. ’ Travis learned the rules and woe unto an opponent who transgressed the code. In 1899 Herbert M. Harriman proved golf was not beyond the ken of Americans by defeating Findlay S. Douglas, a recent ars rival from Scotland, for this country’s initial victory in the United States Amateur. The following -year ‘Travis hooked up with. Douglas in the final, and although outhit consistently from the tee, and for distances that would have disturbed most golfers, he stuck to the small-calibered artillery and gave Douglas the chipping and putting lesson of his life to win, 2 up. This was with the gutta percha ball, and Travis was resplendent in beaver, gaifers and plus-threes or something. CC 8s 8 =» THE FOLLOWING year the Haskell rubber-core ball made its appearance. It was shunned by foreign-born stars, but Travis adopted it. The ball shortened courses for him. Travis used the Haskell ball in the 1901. United States- Amateur and became the first player to win a major championship with the Bounding Billy. He repeated in 1903. - Travis was 42 when he decided’ to take a whack at the British Amateur, He brought back the coronet and memories so bitter they deferred him from ever returning to play in a British championship again, although he continued to play good golf until 1915. The British Amateur was held at Sandwich in 1904. Travis was

not assigned a locker, despite his

fame as America’s outstanding amateur. He had to dress in a

‘hallway, park his clubs in the-

professional’s shop. He complained about the caddie assigned to him. Other discourtesies burned the bronzed little shotmaker to a crisp.

TRAVIS DROPPED them in from every corner of the green with his celebrated Schenectady putter, the center-shafted weapon with the bulky aluminum head, which the British called a croquet mallet. 0 One by one England's. best simon-pures fell before the putting wizardry of Travis until he arrived at the final round to meet Edward Blackwell, Great Britain’s longest hitter. Sandwich,

with its long carries, was tailored tor Blackwell. The croquet mallet was more puissant than ever, however, and Travis became the first golfer ever to take the British amateur trophy from British soil. So displeased were the British that a rule was passed immediately outlawing the Schenectady putter. It remains today one of the few divergencies between British and American rules. Walter J. Travis’ phenomenal success at an age when few tackle severe competition in athletics gave businessmen the golfing idea.

Jimmy Gust and Arnold Deer, Indianapolis middleweight maulers, have been paired for a four-round preliminary clash on the five-scrap professional mitt bill which will usher in the outdoor boxing season at Sports Arena next Monday night.
