Leaders Expected to Ignore Wheeler's Demand for

Reconvening.

WASHINGTON, Aug. 5 (U. P.).— Congressional leaders today were expected to ignore the demand of Senator Burton K. Wheeler (D. Mont.) that congress be reconvened to rescind the recent selective service order making fathers liable for induction after Oct. 1. Wheeler, at his summer cabin at Belton, Mont., accused War Manpower Commission Chairman Paul V.! McNutt -of “playing power politics” with the draft ahd threatened to telegraph’ Senate Democratic Leader Alben W. Barkley of Kentucky requesting him to reconvene congress if the new draft instructions were not modified by early today. McNutt was out of town and WMC spokesmen declined to comment But no change in the order affecting 6,500,000 men in Class III-A— mostly pre-Pearl Harbor fathers— was forthcoming.

Barkley, at his home in Paducah, Ky., has not been. reachable since Wheeler's statement was made. But apparently the decision will be up to him because other congressional leaders either declined to comment of thought it unnecessary. Vice President Henry A. Wallace and Speaker Sam Rayburn, presiding officers of the senate and house, §| respectively, and the only ones aside from President Roosevelt who could declined to

Saved by Guard KEANSBURG, N. 1 Aug. 5 (U. P.).—Two WAVES, Loth yeoman 3-¢, acknowledged today vhat their training as clerical workers lef them at a loss on the water. The lady sailors and four children were picked up by coast guardsmen off West Bank, Staten Island, early today after drifting for almost 24 hours in a rowboat in Raritan bay. The WAVES, Frances Rice and Margaret Roache of Washington, D. C,, told their rescuers they had spent a terrifying night as a squally sea and strong currents buffeted their 12-foot craft. They had set out from Keansburg yes‘terday afternoon end when they failed to return after dark, Mrs. William Lavery of Keansburg, mother of the children, notified the coast guard. They were six miles from the Keansburg dock when they were rescued. None of the six suffered any apparent :l1 effects.
