Appears as Yours Women in 'Hers to Hold"

By VIRGINIA HATFIELD Deanna Durbin makes her second film debut in “Hers to Hold” at the Indiana theater tHis week. Her first debut was. as a child singer in “Three Smart Girls” several years ago. This new picture launches her on a new career as a young woman. So, it's a grown-up Miss Durbin you'll see from now ¢n, This picture is, more or less, dedicated to that purpose. By a none-too-subtle trick of having her screen family show moving pictures taken from her past films, the contrast between the old and new star is made evident. It's enjoyable, though. Mis¢ Durbin is cast as a debutante with the same mother and father she had in “Three Smart Girls,” Nella Walker and Charles Winninger. She meets an air corps lieutenant, Joseph Cotten, who's temporarily working at Vega Aircraft Corp. In short order the debutante decides they're meant for each other. Deb Geis a Job

The lieutenant is dubious, but the deb gets a job at Vega to be near him and convince him that he’s not a “widgin” (flier who can’t be domesticated), but .rather a “dead duck.” The plot progresses with Cotten changing from a “widgin” to a “dead duck” time: and time again. Not until the last scene does he reveal which he really is. -._ Miss Durbin is in excellent voice in four songs, “Begin the Beguine,” “Kishmiri Song,” “Say a. Prayer for the Boys Over- There” and “Seguidilla” from the opera “Carmen.” Her “Say a Prayer” prcbably. is the most effective because it hits. close {to many persons in the audience. The story might have been adapted to the cast, rather than the cast to the story. Miss Durbin has blossomed into a convincing glamour girl and Joseph Cotten is suave enough for any debutante. Mr. Winninger is delightful in his absent-mindedness and the comedy work of the lieutenant’s friend, Gus Schilling, and the butler, Ludwig Stossel, would be hard to beat. Another interesting aspect to the film is that many scenes were taken at the Vega plant in Burbank, Cal Special army authorization was required for making them. If you like comedy, romance and good singing, you'll get your money’s worth in “Hers to Hold.” ” ” 2 Performers like Harriet Hilliard ‘land Ozzie Nelson, Veloz and Yolanda and Tip, Tap and Toe save “Honeymoon Lodge,” the Indiana’s second feature, from being too dull. It’s supposed-fo be a farcical comedy. David Bruce and June Vincent take the leads as playwrights whose marriage has gone on the rocks. {They decide to yelive the scenes prior to their marriage to decide what the trouble is. 1heir plans J aréspartially foiled by Miss Hillierd and Rod Cameron; who don’t know they are husband and wife.
