VANNUYS DU
+ HERE AUGUST 9
Says He Will Talk Plenty Of Hoosier Politics When He Gets Here.
By DANIEL M. KIDNEY Times Staff Writer
WASHINGTON, July 29—Monday Aug. 9 is the latest tentative date announced by Senator Frederick VanNuys (D. Ind) for his ad-
vent in Indianapolis. A previous
delay was caused by the illness of
Mrs. VanNuys',
mother, who lives with them at their farm home at nearby Vienna, Va. Mrs. VanNuys intends to accompany the senator and they will stay at the Indian-
apolis Athletic
Mr. Kidney club.
Here the sena- |
tor expects to “talk plenty of good you Hoosier Democrat politics” he #aid. It may be that he will decide upon announcing for a third term in 1944. Criticisms of him coming from those boosting Governor Henry L. Echricker for the senatorial nomi_nation he attributes very largely to © Democratic state headquarters and particularly to State Chairman Fred Bays.
Will Answer Charges
{ He likely will answer all such charges while in Indianapolis, in-| cluding the reason for his failure to contribute to the state Democratic | campaign fund at a time when Mr.
Bays was credited with saying that | he (VanNuys) would not be per- | mitted to address the state convention as long as he was managing it. The split between the senior] genator and state chairman came | after an almost lifelong friendship. | Both Fred and his elder brother, the | late Lee Bays, Sullivan county Democratic boss, supported Sena-| / tor VanNuys at the time he was at | logger-heads with then Governor | Paul V. McNutt. Now what remains of the socalled “McNutt faction” in ‘the Democratic party in ndiana largely is supporting the senator for renomination and opposing the substitution of Governor Schricker instead. | tr All interest here seems to center ¥n the senatorship and the Demo‘erats seem largely to have given the governorship to the Republicans already. R. Earl Peters still is sometimes mentioned for it however.
x Opposition to Capehart | On the Republican side of the genate race, it is reported that or- | ganization support is being given several candidates, particularly State Attorney General Emmert, in an effort to halt Homer Capehart. An interesting point has been| Yaised as to how Mr. Capehart keeps his name before the public via radio as president of the Packard Co., an Indianapolis concern now exclusively engaged in war work. | The point is whether this mention (with no direct political connection) is part of the legitimate advertising deduction included in his ' company’s contracts and thus is being paid for by Uncle Sam?
Tomatoes Given A Victory Tint
CHICAGO, July 290 (U. P.).— Neighbors congratulated Robert Barker and Everett Jordan when their victory garden tomatoes
turned ripe red while those in |
surrounding plots were still green. Closer inspection showed that the Barker and Jordan tomatoes had been tinted with red nail
