By WILLIAM C. PAYETTE United Press Staff Correspondent HOLLYWOOD, July 29.—A girl swam the pants off us today. We dont like to say it, but she can swim faster on her back than we can with what we always thought was our Australian crawl : It’s a crawl, all right, Esther Williams said, but not what the Australians had in mind. In fact, she said, you might call it a creep. : Miss Williams’ last swimming partner was Johnny Weissmuller. ‘Mr. Lucky’ At Indiana
Cary Grant's Smooth Item, But the Girl Wins.
By VIRGINIA HATFIELD
Money trouble, girl trouble and draft board trouble all get together te give Cary Grant, gambler de luxe, a run for his money in “Mr. Lucky,” the Indiana’s current attraction which opened yesterday. Mr. Grant picked this story for himself because he thought it suited his acting ability and personality. It does. Although a big-time gambler, he has a code, “Never give a sucker an even break and never play phony with a friend.” He learns to knit and otherwise gets himself into comical situations that make his business less obnoxious. As the film begins, the gambler is wying to promote a bankroll so he can take his boat, “Fortuna,” to South American waters and at the same time dodge the draft by posing as another man. He meets socialite Laraine Day who is trying to raise $100,000 for War Relief, Inc, to send medical supplies overseas.
The Double-Cross Recognizing a good set-up, Cary persuades the group to use his gambling concession at a fund-raising party, so that he may abscond with the money. Instead, he falls tor the socialite, gets double-crossed by an ex-partner and eventually changes his plan. Mr. Lucky introduces a new dou-ble-talk to the films, supposedly of Australian derivation. It's a system of rhyming. For example—lady from Bristol means pistol, twist and twirl means girl, north and south means mouth and so on. It's confusing, but it's fun. Laraine Day is an apt pupil in picking up this lingo, also in taking over as a full-blown heroine of a film after being somewhat buried as Nurse Mary Lamont in the “Dr. series for several years. “Mr. Lucky” offers something

= ” A homey film is “Gildersleeve’s /Bad Day,” second feature at the |Indiana this week. It stars Harold Peary, former Clinton, Ind., citizen and headliner on the radio's “Gildersleeve” programs. He's the man with the contagious laugh. This time Gildy is one of 12 men, good and true, summoned to serve on a jury. He receives a letter from the defendant's friends bribing him to hold out, but the letter is sent to the cleaners in his coat pocket before he gets to see it. Gildy, on his own, decides there is insufficient evidence to convict Louie, the safe-cracker, and holds out. After the trial he gets $1000 which he thinks is for a canteen fund, but is in reality the pay-off. He turns the money over to the judge, head of the fund from whose safe it was stolen. Yes, Gildy has a bad day. This film was made for laughs and gets them.
Poor Chorines
Times Special HOLLYWOOD, July 29.—Shoe rationing gives John @Q. Public enough shoes to keep him from going barefooted. But think of the poor chorines! Forty of them will dance farefooted in one of Hollywood’s biggest musicals of the season, “The Girls He Left Behind.” Director Busby Berkeley discovered that one pair of dancing shoes allotted to a dancer would not withstand the vigorous workouts. He asked the girls what they wanted to do about it, so they voted to dance barefooted. Because they are dancing shoeless, all 40 girls are committed to a foot-conditioning routine long practiced by athletes. They “temper” their dancing feet by soaking them daily in tannic acid solution to toughen the epidermis.
SANDERS IS NAMED TO POLICE POSITION
Capt. Howard L. Sanders has been appointed by Police Chief Beeker to the post of chief investigator in the legal department to replace Capt. Marion C. Van Sickle, who retired recently to enter private business. Once retired, Capt. Sanders reentered the police department last January and was assigned as chief bailiff in municipal court 4. Recently he had been serving as supvisor of the police training school. He joined the force in 1920. During the first world war he belonged to the same regiment commanded by Mayor Tyndall, then a colonel. Corporation Council Sidney S. Miller was captain of his battery. Capt. Sanders had been “mentioned” as a nominee for the police chief's job, prior to the appointment of Chief Beeker.
