Going to British Isles? Here's a List of Things to Take That Will Prove Priceless

By TOM WOLF Times Special Writer

LONDON, July 29.—So many | people—soldiers and other trav- |

elers—have turned up here load-

i ed down with a variety of articles

| of interviews

easily obtainable in Britain and |

the priceless items completely unavailable here that its time to set the record straight. If you know youre coming to the British Isles—or if you want

| to send a small gift of less than

eight ounces to anyone here, the check list below will be invaluable. Even if youre not sure where youre going, use this list.

| |

Most of the things theyre short of here are scarce in other theaters you may land in. These suggestions are the result with scores of soldiers—and of no little sad personal experience. In general, you can get in England most of the clothes, uniforms (rationed though they be) and toilet articles that you want. Exceptions are noted below. Soap is a special case, because it is the one item most universally brought here by newcomers. The soap situation is simply this: Soap is rationed in Britain. However, a soldier can get all the soap he needs at an army PX. The PX

soon will be entirely out of Amer-

ican soap. British wartime soap, though inferior to American, is adequate. So if you must have deluxe soap, bring it. Everyone should bring: 1. Watch in good repair. You can't buy a new watch here; sec-ond-hand watches sell for fantastic prices. Repairing takes from one to six months. 2. Cigaret lighter. It is not accidental that British “utility” lighters are called “futility” lighters. Bring more than one if you can. You'll be remembered gratefully by anyone you give one to. Don't try to smuggle in fluid; there's plenty here. 3. Fountain pen. It's next to impossible to get one here,

4. Fruit juice concentrates. Even if you don’t miss fruit juice yourself, a little looks like manna to the English, who haven't seen any citrus fruit for four years. 5. Razor blades. PX variety are not so good as ours and theyre scarcer than hens’ teeth in nonarmy stores. 6. Hair shampoo. If you use it, bring it. 7. (A majority of those interviewed put this as No. 1.) Bourbon whisky. Scotch and Irish are currently selling—if you can find any—at about $10 a bottle. Bourbon is non-existent. Even if you don’t drink bourbon, you can trade it for twice as much of whatever liquor you do drink.

Officers should bring: 1. Insignia, 2. Alarm clock (if they're still available at home), 3. Sneakers and sweat shirt, if your favorite sport demands them, 4. Underwear and handkerchiefs. Capt. Lee V. Dolan, the Pittsburger who is PX operations officer in London, says these are the clothing items hardest to supply and most frequently fore gotten by officers here. 5. Coffee of the “make it in the cup” variety. Coffee is uniformly bad here, except in army messes. 6. Portable typewriter, if you use one, 7. A good flashlight, British utility “torches” burn out fast.

Enlisted men should bring: Any of the above pertinent, Women should bring:

1. 2. and 3. Silk stockings if you possibly can find some. In the cosmetics line, most items are available here, but wartime quality is poor. You'll make a tremendous hit with any girl in Britain with a good quality lipstick, hand cream, powder puff, hair shampoo, mascara and all sorts of cream. Bring hair or bobby pins if you use them. You won't get any here. Nail enamel here is inferior. Enamel remover is almost non-existent. There is no facial tissue here. Bring soap flakes if you want to wash your own undies,
