Bass Carry Their Own Worms

Ry TIM TIPPETT OUR ENTHUSIASM for fishing died a thousand deaths this week. It was reported to us that bass in Eagle creek were infested with worms. We were all set to throw away our tackle and start helping around

the house for the duration.

However, before establishing such a pre-

cedent we gave the conservation department a fast check by phone.

And so we're going fishing again.

been glowering at the unswept garage and foot high grass in the yard why just throw away the broom and let the grass grow. The fish and game division, unlike some government agencies we could mention, was on its toes and had the situation and the answers well in hand. It seems that worms have bothered Hoosier fish for years and your reaction can safely be: “So what?” The worms don't bother the fish and they are easily found and removed The conservation boys made a survey of the problem several vears ago. They found that fish infested with worms or mussels are common in this Icecality, Tippecanoe and some stagn-nt ponds and lakes have mo.» inan their share of this troubdie. However there is no danger in handling or eating these fish. To get rid of bugs just skin the fish and give them the brush off,

The worms attach themselves to the fish and work their way under the skin and after a time the fish and become free moving agents. Mussels at one stage of their life do the same thing, (This is probably as good a place as any to urge you anglers to postcard to the conservation department any out-of-the-ordinary behavior or facts about fishing in the state. Remember the fish and game division was created to make fishing as near perfect as possible. The more co-operation they get, the better fishing will be.) =

Well, Let's G

WITH THE exception of few days at the opening of season, conservation officials, lieve the next few weeks should afford the best fishing vet. Stream and weather conditions all point to it.

Give Rules

For Hunting

WASHINGTON, July 21 (U. P). —With the greatest southward flight of ducks and geese in 20] vears in prospect, the interior de-| partment today announced the reg- | ulations to govern the hunting of | migratory waterfowl in 1043. It was explained that it will be! one of the best seasons for what hunters there are, because “a lot of sportsmen are in the army and war production and because of trans-! portation difficulties.” |

Though ammunition will be | available. it was pointed out that the supply will be far less than in normal times. Two of the major changes in this vear's hunting regulations are that hunters will be allowed to start shooting a half hour before sun up; and in order to allow sportsmen to make better use of their game as meat they mayv keep it two weeks longer than previously. In former vears, hunters were only allowed to keep the game 30 davs after the close of the hunting season.
