Jinxed Film Is Finished
'For Whom Bell Tolls' Unveiling Wednesday.
By ERSKINE JOHNSON NEA Service Staff Correspondent Nearly three vears since purchase of the novel, Hollywood is about to ring the box-office bell with the film version of Ernest Hemingway's “For Whom the Bell Tolls.” The picture will have its world premier in New York tomorrow, a three million dollar technicolor car= bon copy of the book, including a Hays office version of the sleeping bag episode, a Maria with her hair cropped to within three inches of her scalp and the author's choice, Gary Cooper and Ingrid Bergman, in the leading roles.
Picture Was Jinxed
a motion picture almost “For Whom the Bell Tolls” is it, jinxed at the beginning by the Jap attack on Pearl Harbor and by a Maria who had to be replaced in the second inning. Producer Samuel Goldwyn finally agreed to loan Gary Cooper to Paramount for the Jordan role in return for the services of Director Wood to direct Cooper in “Pride of the Yankees.” Production of] "FWTBT"” ceased for seven months.” The location jaunt was the toughest in film history. Madge Bellamy Seeks 'Divorce’
LAS VEGAS, Nev, July 13 (U. P.).—Madge Bellamy, glamour girl of silent films, sought a “divorce” and a share of $3,000,000 in community property today from a millionaire lumberman to whom she was never married, but at whom she fired three shots in San Francisco last January. Miss Bellamy, 39, still attrac= tive, based her claims on a “weds dingless marriage” and a peeculi= arity of Nevada law which says that a ceremony is unnecessary if the parties agree to a marriage. The blond, brown-eyed star of early Western thrillers claimed that such an agreement existed heween her and Albert Stanwood Murphy, 53, a wealthy California lumberman, The agreement was reached April 26, 1941, she said in her divorce suit, but a ceremony never was performed. Murphy later married June Almy, attractive New York model.
