Closed for Vacations—
SEVERAL RESTAURANTS, Including both of Stegemeier’'s, and Joe Stahr’s, too. were closed this week, giving their employees vacations at the same time. . . . It's too hard to get substitute help to spread the vacations out. . . . Some of the dry cleaning firms are doing the same thing. . . . Shutting down gives them a chance to repair machinery and get things in shape for the winter. . . . The OPA is investigating the finding of 12 million gallons worth of gasoline rationing coupons in a creek near Veedersburg. . . . They apparently were stolen from a shipment to a Dallas, Tex, warehouse. . . . And OPA officials have warned Hoosier motorists to cut their driving as they are “riding fast into tire trouble.” . + + Synthetic rubber tires for all are still many months away. . . . Governor Schricker reappointed Herbert P. Kenney as head of the state legislative reference bureau, and Ross Freeman as deputy state accounts board examiner. . . . He also reappointed Jap Jones to the state highway commission and Irwin Wesley to the financial institutions commission.

It Was a Quiet Fourth—
OUR CELEBRATION of July Fourth was pretty tame—quite a contrast to the pre-war days. . . . Firecrackers were conspicuous by their absence. . . . Nary a one reported. . . . The only fireworks displays were one at Victory field for the benefit of the army emergency relief fund, and another at Riverside park. . . : An aerial bomb set fire to the roof of the skating rink at the park. . + War plants worked, as usual. . . . But employees of many stores and offices had a long week-end, with Monday being observed as a holiday, too. . Hundreds jam-packed busses and trains for holiday trips. . . . Some folks went on picnies. . Others went fishing. . . But more of them just stayed home and read, or pulled weeds in their victory gardens. . . . Two hundred “no swimming” signs have been posted near creeks, gravel pits and rivers in the city limits by police. . . . At the same time, plans to reopen the municipal beaches were abandoned for the time being because of the water in the White river being contaminated. . . The city swimming pools have been doing a landoffice business. Police are investigating the disappearance of rationing coupons good for 875 gallons of gas from the Wake Up station at 1510 Roosevelt ave, Several other stations recently have reported disappearance of gas coupons. . . George M. Barnard has been reappointed to a four-year term on the public service commission.
City Hall Housecleaning— CITY HALL EMPLOYEES have settled down again after a lot of worry. . . . They heard a report that there was going to be a “housecleaning” at the hall. . . . can imagine the buzzing that went en. And then they learned the truth: It's the interior of the building that’s going to be cleaned. . . Carl H. Mullen has been elected to his fifth term as president of the Indiana State Federation of Labor. . . . June is the month of brides, but that doesn’t bother service men. . . . Just about as many of them are middle-aisling it this month as last. . . . A mortgage no longer hangs over the episcopal residence of Bishop and Mrs. Titus Lowe, of the Methodist church. . . + The mortgage on the property, at 4004 N. Pennsylvania, was burned in ceremonies Wednesday. . . . County Clerk Jack Tilson may lose the little finger of his right hand as the result of a victory garden accident. . .
