Meet Mrs. Green. She's Beatrice Kay to all Circle theater patrons this week—the star of radio's “Gay Nineties Revue.” But as Mrs. Green she was known to guests at Draper hall in a small Wisconsin town, She took a sneak vacation there just recently with her husband, Sylvan Green, who accompanies iano. Tired from being on tour since | February, if you can imagine the Greens tired, they made arrange{ments for their vacation with the provision that the hotel manager | should tell no cne of their identity. | It worked out fairly well except for a snooper, whom they called Mrs. | Waterwings. She wanted to know | about all the radic personalities they knew. But now they're very much at work—Miss Kay with her | twisting and raucous voice, | Mr. Green tickling the ivories. | though vou'd never know it by re fun they have before an audience, their work is in dead seriousness. When she went on the radio to sing “Gay Nineties” songs some four years ago, Miss Kay did six of research on authentic singing of that period. If there's

WOMEN Needed in *ESSENTIAL JOBS
In order that Indianapolis war plants reach the production quotas for them, 20,000 women not employed at present will have to accept positions in these plants. These positions are not difficult —the average woman can handle them easily. How about you? Our boys in the fighting services need your help. Turn now to the Want Ad columns—select 2 or 3 of the ads that appeal most to you and investigate the work being offered.

‘radio material. Finally even she | and Mr. Green believed it. In 1938, Rubicam & Young Advertising Co. asked her to audition for a spot on “Town Hall” After waiting for an eternity, it seemed, Miss Kay said she had to go home to eat and to rest. She'd had a very tiring day—20 whole minutes on the stage. A friend talked her into staying and she walked in for her audition before a “group of fresh-out-of-college men and their secretaries.” By that time she was belligerent.

She thought her employers were “crazy” because both she and Mr. Green were convinced that her work wasn't for radio. As it turned out, her work was for radio and for the first two years on the “Gay Nineties Revue” the program's Crossley rating was the highest for any half-hour nonsustaining program. When the Greens wind up their present tour in September, be in Hollywood to look over a script Columbia pictures has prepared for Miss Kay. After the picture is finished, they will return to New York to the spct where they have a garden and love to go hunting and fishing. Right now, Miss Kay is intent on | getting a parachute jumper’s coat | because it has so many pockets to | store garden tools and what-not in. Is there a man at Stout field who could see that she got one? Miss Kay's the sweetheart of several branches of the armed services including men at Samson naval base. She has been legally adopted by the men at the naval base— papers drawn up by her lawyer and everything. Today when she addresses sailors on the “Hi, Sailor” program, she will wear the scrvice pin they gave her on the first anniversary of her adoption. Quite a gal, that Miss Kay.

Ted Fio Rito On Bill Here
Gay Nineties Playing at Circle This Week.
If you like swing bands, Ted Fio Rito and his boys are in towh to cater to you Lhis week at the Circle. If you go to see the main act, Miss Beatrice Kay is there to sing songs of the “Gay Nineties.” If you like dancing, the Claire Sisters, rhythm tapsters, will give you a run for your money and if you like to hear imitations of famous stars Neal Stanley will be on hand to greet you. The Fio Rito offerings range from patriotic songs to “One 0'Clock Jump.” For a medley of his compositions, the maestro plays the piano in a fashion easy on the ears. Dancing for the Claire Sisters isn't just tap dancing. It's acrobatics too. Those who went to school with them here in Indianapolis will remember them as the Karstadts., They've been billed all over the world since then. Their dancing pace is terrific.
Jap Vs. Girdle
Neal Stanley's impressions of actors include Eddie Cantor, James Cagney, Jimmy Stewart, Donald Duck and others. The audience seemed to like his gag, “What's the difference between a Jap and a girdle?—No difTerence, they both crawl up your back and it takes a Yank to pull them down.” From the time Miss Kay hits the stage, she usurps it. Her “renditions’ of “Strawberry Blonde,” “Curse of an Aching Heart,” “I Don’t Care,” “Mr. Five by Five” and others took the patrons by storm. They liked her so well yesterday, they called her back for seven encores.

“Sherlock Hoimes in Washington” is the film fare at the Circle. For the first time in his career, the English detective comes to the U. S. to locate a valuable British decument. Basil Rathbone is again seen in the title role with Nigel Bruce as Dr. Watson. Their adventures with Nazi spies in a Washington antique shop are out of the realm of imagination. But then, who expects anything very realistic in a detective film? It's supposed to be exciting and the detective is supposed to be placed at death's door c¢nly to escape. ‘Sherlock Holmes in Washington” is no exception. It's exciting. —V. H.

Times Special
ST. LOUIS, July 10.—Municipal Opera, the giant open-air theater located in St. Louis’ largest natural
park in the heart of the city, is that 10,000 seats. aren't enough these nights. Total attendance for the first three productions so far this summer reached 210,882 persons, exceeding the same period last summer by more than 50,000. Two performances were cancelled because of the rain, which cut the attendance by at least 20,000, as both performances had been sold out. Providing weather does not encroach too strongly, Municipal |Opera should definitely set a new all-time season's attendance record during its current silver anniversary celebration. This week, the opera revived Oscar Straus’ “The Chocolate Soldier.” It will be followed by “Great Waltz,” “Rosalie,” “Desert Song,” “Babes in Toyland,” ‘Merry Widow” and ‘Chu Chin Chow.” Since the opening of the season, June 3, “Balalaika,” “Sunny,” “Rose Marie” and “Sons o’ Guns” have been presented. ‘Rose Marie,” the third week offering, became one of the 10 highest weeks in Municipal Opera's 25-year history when the total attendance for seven nightly shows reached 73,097.
