Lt. Danziger Wins Medals

Musician Proves Courage in African War.

Lt. Harry Lee Danziger of the army tank corps is the first Indianapolis symphony orchestra memper, so far as is known here, to receive medals for wounds and conspicuous bravery in action. He has been awarded the order of the purple heart and the silver star for action in the North African campaign, according to word received here by Leonard A. Strauss, member of the orchestra’s board of directors. Lt. Danziger was a member of the first violin section of the local orchestra for four years. He also was an accomplished pianist and organist. Between the time he left the orchestra in 1939 and enlisted in the army, he was music director for several Broadway productions.

Frequent Visits Here

Before his departure for Africa, Lt. Danziger was stationed in Kentucky for a number of months and was a frequent visitor in Indianapolis. His present whereabouts are unknown, Mr. Strauss said, except that he is recuperating from wounds received in battle. The silver star citation to Lt. Danziger, as received by Mr. Strauss, reads: “Harry Ise Danziger + + + for gallantry in action on . , . 1943, near Tunisia, The attack of his company was being delayed by the presence of enemy anti-tank guns. Voluntarily and upon his own initiative he ordered his tank forward alone in an attempt to locate a route of advance. “The tank was subjected to heavy eneiny fire, but he continued forward. He then dismounted from the tank and continued forward on foot to locate the position of the enemy guns and to secure some enemy prisoners. While thus engaged, his tank was hit and ordered back.

Armed with Pistol

Although alone and armed only with a pistol, he captured several enemies and marched them back to his company’s position. “The gallantry, aggressive leader= ship and devotion to duty with complete disregard for his own welfare displayed by 2d Lt. Danziger reflect great eredit upon himself and the command and are deserving of the highest praise.” The medal was {issued at the command of Maj. Gen. Harmon.

PREMIERE FOR DISNEY FILM SET

Following on the heels of “Saludos Amigos,” Walt Disney's technicolor good-will film of South America, comes “Victory Through Air Power.” The new show will have its world premiere in New York July 17. In “Saludos Amigos,” the Disney staff introduced a new paint brush technique in which scenes were painted before the audience. Now it's reported that the simplicity of story telling in “Victory Through Air Power” may be the forerunner of a new dramatic technique ems ployed in the filming of certain types of war pictures.
