HIS ‘BODYGUARD’

Hires an Army of ‘Loyal’ French Youths to Defend Him.

- Co! ht, 1943, by The Indianapolis Times PIs The Chicago Daily News, In Inc. |

BERNE, June 30—Latest Vichy | reports disclose that Puppet Premier Pierre Laval, feeling less and less secure in the face of allied invasion ‘threats is speeding up recruitment of ‘his personal bodyguard, the re«gently created militia. A monthly salary of 4000 francs— a considerable sum for a French soldier,. who, in the armistice army, only got 300—is being promised to those who feel like enlisting. Simultaneously, recruits are told that they will avoid being sent to Germany—by far the more attractive inducement. The number of recruits to date is 20,000, according fo reliable estimates. But Laval’ "wants 70,000 and quickly, too.

Wants 200,000

Laval hopes that by next Septer-| ber the total number of troops on! ‘ whom he “can rely” will form a! handsome army, 200,000 strong. This * figure will include not only the! © militia but also the Garde Mobile! * and police units. { Laval’s plan for the formation of this “army of order” is being coun-| tered effectively these days by, French patriots who have now 1e-! “ofganized themselves on entirely | mew lines and, like their Polish col‘leagues, are waging underground war. The French Communist party +. and De Gaullist groups of resistance have jointly decided on an . open campaign of terrorism. Anonymous letters are dropped in the letter. boxes of young men known to be toying with the idea of enlistment. “If you sign the enlistment form,
