J Depa Negro Squadron . oy fe Wins Dogfight WASHINGTON, June 25 (U. P.). —The first U. 8. army Negro fighter squadron to go into action came through its initial encounter with enemy fighters with flying colors, according to reports to the war department released yesterday, Six members of the squadron, flying P-40 Warhawks, were attacked June 18 over Pantelleria by 12 German Focke-Wulf 190’s. The Focke-Wulfs were escorting German bombers attempting to raid ‘the island, then in allied hands. High overhead 10 more German fighters hovered to provide protection. The American Negro fliers, led by 1st Lt. Charles W. Dryden, 22, of 800 Holmes st., Bronx, N. Y. parried the Nazi thrust, damaged

two German fighters, and forced the remainder to retire. The Amer-

LOOSE TALK: RAPPED

BY VISITING MAJOR

With unnecessary loss of lives because people insist on their rights to talk, half-way measures to combat leakage of vital war information will not suffice, Maj. Albert J. Stowe of the G-2, intelli-

gence ditision of the war department, stated last night at a meeting of civic organization representatives in the War Memorial building. Maj. Stowe, representing Maj. Gen. . George B. Strong, assistant chief of staff, war department intelligence division, is addressing civilian defense groups in 29 key cities preliminary to the launching of a nation-wide campaign against “dangerous talk.” “My mission Is a dead serious one,” Maj. Stowe said. “The safeguarding of war information is a job for every person that will last as long as the war. Theusands of lives may be lost needlessly because

of careless talk.”

given bombing but the far more important indirect damage. In

the complex web of modern German industry, a direct hit on a Ruhr steel factory impairs the .work of 20 or 30 other factories scattered over the reich. The best military experts here estimate that as a result of allied bombings to date, Ruhr production has sunk 25 per cent. They say that this figure is if anything, conservative. For the whole of Germany, this means a production decline of 8 per cent. No specific cases of destruction can be cited here as Swiss neutrality forbids revelation of the “military secrets” of either camp. Even if they could, they would only give fragmentary bits of the general picture.

Reichsbahn has now forbidden the overloading of wornout trucks.’

Many Factories Hit

BY ATTACKING the Reich's railroad system, the allies have indirectly affected German production in - factories far distant from the Ruhr. Thus, it is estimated that the monthly production of the important Siemens armaments works near Berlin has sunk 15 per cent owing to lack of raw materials and another 10 per cent due to delays in the arrival of mass-produced machine parts. Another incidental but extremely serious problem facing the Nazis as a result of allied bombings is the housing of roofless evacuees. Any radical solution of this problem by new build-

ally, royal air force pilots contented themselves with the bombing of railroad lines and bridges but it was soon discovered that German efficiency could repair the lines within 24 hours, and that temporary bridges could be built by the Todt experts in a maximum of two days. BOMBINGS have also seriously impaired the efficiency of workers, who suffer from lack of sleep, nervous fatigue and moral depression. Most reliable observers here believe that the average daily output per man in the Ruhr coal mines, which cannot be touched from the air, has fallen 25 per cent during the past year. way , workshops and locomotives. In Cologne, Dusseldorf, Oberhausen and Frefeld—all key cen=ters of Germany’s western railroad system--workshops have been successfully bombed. Now all serious repairs to iocomotives and trucks must be effected in towns in central, Germany some 100 miles east of the Rhineland with consequent loss of time. ” ” ”

Cripple Locomotives

EQUALLY crippling to German economy has been the destruction in the month of May of 53 locomotives. The loss of 50 locomotives means that 2000 German trucks capable of transporting 40,000 tons of merchandise have nothing to pull them. As a consequence of the allied eoncentrated blows against German railroads and engines, it is estimated by experts here that the efficiency

ern and northern Germany has been reduced by approximately 40 per cent. The Nazis themselves have admitted that a severe strain has been placed on their transport system as a result of allied bombings. German economic missions have tried desperately to buy locomotives from the few remaining neutrals on this continent. Recently, the Nazis have also imposed heavy fines on railway workers who do not unload trucks quickly enough—sure proof of the scarcity of trucks. Finally, the

not, however, be interpreted as meaning that the German production machine is rapidly reaching the point where it will have to stop. There are several factors which destroy this illusion. The first is, the Nazis are extremely quick in repairing damage or having others do so. Essen has been bombed 56 times to date without being knocked out. In France, the Renault works, bombed heavily in April, 1942, were entirely rebuilt two months later. As for LeCruesot, attv.cked last October, it was flourishing again when allied planes visited it anew last Saturday night. The second factor is that the Nazis have transferred 30 per cent of their factories to the east and reconstructed another 10 per cent underground, with the result that approximately 40 per cent of the Ruhr industries have escaped bombings altogether. Finally, reinforced German defenses have increased the attackers’ losses to 'a degree which cannot be overlooked. A recent study made by a neutral observer here, who is in a good position to know, suggests that the attackers lost nearly 10 per cent of their planes in the latest raids. To bring about the complete collapse of German war economy the German morale would need far more extensive raids from closer airdromes.

CLAIMS KAISER YARD HAS NOT PRODUCED

SAN FRANCISCO, June 25 (U. P.).—Henry J. Kaiser's shipyard 3 at Richmond, Cal.,, has spent more than $100,000,000 and has yet to complete its first ship, a civil service auditor testified before a congressional merchant marine committee. Alonzo B. Bryan, auditor for the maritime commission, said the 3 yard would not complete a ship until August. The first hull was placed in April, 1942, and it was launched last November, but fittingout has not been finished, he said. Bryan told the committee the yard had hoarded so much material that “it is small wonder other shipyards are delayed by lack of materials.” He said five Kaiser attorneys spent 90 per cent of.their time arguing with the government.

HOOSIER PILOTS GET CRACKS AT THE AXIS

Hoosier pilots are getting in ‘their licks at the axis. In yesterday's bombing raid and dog-fights over Sardinia two Indiana airmen were credited with shooting down enemy planes. Second Lt. John Garbett of la Porte, a P-38 Lightning pilot, shot down planes in the running battle over the island, and Flight Officer Mark Boone of Peru picked off enemy fighters in a dog-fight which kept on for 60 miles out to sea. He is a P-40 pilot.
