Law Scroll To Be Read

Gerimony Is Memorial For Mrs. Stein.

In ceremonies reflecting ancient Jewish customs, the United Hebrew congregation will dedicate a new scroll of law, march in parade and witness a wedding tomorrow. Rabbi Samuel J. Fox, congregation spiritual director, is shown above holding the scroll of the Five Books of Moses which will be added to the synagog’s treasures. It took several years of exacting work for the maker to print the text by hand with special ink on heavy parchment. The scroll is said to be the last brought out of Poland before the German invasion. The parchment sheets are sewn together with sheep gut and fastened to two long spindles surmounted by massive crowns. A pointer of silver filigree is provided to guide the reader. . Scroll on Spindle

The scroll is rolled from one spindle to another as the rabbi reads, the congregation following

the words in their printed Bibles.

The script is so arranged that it takes 52 weeks, or one year, of Sabbath services to complete the reading of the law. When not in use, the scroll is protected by a heavy velvet cover embroidered in gold. The family of the late Mrs. Nathan Stein are giving the scroll as a memorial to her. Her son, Nathan Stein, petty officer 3-c, will be married to Miss Selma Greenstein at the conclusion of the dedication service. The congregation parading along Union st, bearing the new scroll, will be met by the elders of the synagog, carrying the old" scrolls, who will guide the procession into the building. Rabbi Eleazor Rubin Muskin of ‘Chicago will give the address. Rabbi Muskin is the father-in-law of Rabbi Fox, author of works on the Talmud and homiletics, and former president of the Orthodox Rabbinical association of Chicago. At present he is the Midwest, Western and Southern chairman of the emergency committee for the rescue of scholars and laymen in war-torn countries,

and Madrion Bruce will sing, accompanied by Mrs. Helen MecPheeters Rice. : Merle Sidener, leader and teacher of the C. M. B,, is now convalescing at home after an illness in the Methodist hospital. .
