Carnival on Circle

OUT FRONT of the Circle theater these days, a weird sight

greets the eye—strange even 'to citizens accustomed to strange phenomena in this vicinity: Out of a coffin, ‘rises the somewhat undraped, papier-mache figure of a buxom lady, staring vacantly, per-

Somehow, it reminded me of

. enterprise (40 dancing girls, men,

40) at a county fair and agricultural exposition I used to attend

. more or less out of scientific

curiosity. After rising slowly, Little Egypt sags gradually back in her box. One waits and feels a twinge of disappointment. Nobody is shouting, “hurray, hurray, hurray, the show goes on in a minute, folks, hurray,” like they used to back at this fair it puts me in mind of. The appearance of this rustic

side, where it all ties in with the film, “I Walked With a Zombie,” which is strictly from voodoo. This epic, one can predict even at this early ‘date, is no candidate for the academy award, although it is something of a prize."

Times have changed. The Lit-

tle Egypt of my youth has now become a zombie. A zombie, according to RKO-Radio, which is responsible for the picture, and probably for the exhibit on the ‘outside, too, although I'd hate. to ‘pin that on them without proof, is living death. That more or less describes the picture. It is a revelation of the zombies of the Island of Haiti, as represented by the zombies: of Hollywood. Chief zombie is Christine Gordon, who has her screen debut in this. picture sleepwalking like Lady MacBeth in a lowcut nightgown. After about an hour of watching Christine barging around. the bushes in her nightie, with Frances Dee running after her, enough is enough, and one sleepwalks out of the place, to be greeted once more by Little Egypt rising and falling in her coffin like a jack-in-the-box in a very rundown condition. In the last scene, James Ellison bore the zombie out to sea and in the last analysis; the film bored the daylights out of me.

SECOND BIG scare on the sillybill is a saga called “Leopard Man,” billed as the “Thrill-killer of women and girls.” “A savage killer slashing out to ravage beauty by Fang and Claw,” it says. This turnip is about as neurotic as the first big scare. Unaware, and gauzily nude, Little Egypt rises up and down outside, doing double duty for the booby-hatch proceedings in the main tent. All we need now is the tatooed lady and we got th carnival downtown at last.

At Keith's

KEITH'S VAUDEVILLE emporium offers a well-knit vaudeville show, with a series of acts which are fairly solid. Mary Marlowe’s ' characterizations and Leon Navara’s piano gymnastic are first-rate entertainment, The Swiss Bell Ringers open: the bill with their tricky tunes out of glassware and bells. This is an ancient art and a neat one. Lord Lyon, with the assistance of a stooge in the audience, does a balance act with chairs, a table and four gingerale bottles. The finale is the performance of Ruton’s remarkable dogs. Eddie Ruton has been in vaudeville more than 20 years. He has settled down on a 400-acre farm at New ymer, Colo., where he raises cattle, chickens, wheat and trains dogs. Occasionally, he wants to give the dogs a workout, and when things are quiet on the farm, he ventures back on the vaudeville circuit again.

NEIGHBORHOODS

. BEFORE THE Japanese conquest of the Southwest Pacific was begun, the tropical islands of the South Seas were reputed to be places of veritable paradise. With swaying palms, the milk of coconuts, the breezes of the ocean and the charms of lovely brown-skinned maidens as a lure, many an Occidental made his way to these islands of paradise. Now, all is changed. War has come to the islands, where peace

formerly used to reign supreme. “White Savage,” now playing in the neighborhood movie theaters, includes all the above-mentioned features, plus Maria Montez § as the ‘lovely 3 maiden, billed as the “temptress of the tropics.” She plays the .part 3 of a princess. who falls in love with Jon Hall. REPORT NAZIS PUSH DRIVE ON RELIGION

By UNITED PRESS

Articles in Nazi publications in occupied Europe indicate increasing opposition to the Catholic church and Christianity, the office of war information reports. OYI said that European press dispatches quoted the publication Storm, issued by the Dutch Nazi party, as blaming Catholic priests for an “intense” general strike against a German order making Dutch soldiers war prisoners. “They, bishops, priests and clergymen, who co-operate with Jews and intellectpals, are responsible for sabotage and unrest,” the publication said. The Norwegian Nazi newspaper Ragnoroek was quoted as saying: “We Nazis reject Christianity because we reject Judaism and have acknowledged that both are inexfricable enemies.”

Pilot's Mercy Flight-in Vain

NEW YORK, June 19, (U. P.)— The dramatic story of a young army bomber pilot's attempt to save the life”of a navy mother has been revealed with the announcement that an anti-subma-rine patrol plane had been turned off its beat to fly drugs to a naval hospital. Capt. Ralph Blakelock, 23, of Xenia, O., who had a record of 200 hours of anti-submarine warfare took off during a thunderstorm with penicillin, a new antitoxin for infections. He flew to Wilmington, N. C, with the drug, which then was taken to Southport naval base, where the woman lay dying after a caesarian section. She died 15 days after the operation but the baby was saved. Blakelock received the air medal for extraordinary achievement for his mercy flight.

SUPPLIES OF LIQUOR " MAY BE INCREASED

WASHINGTON, June 19 (U. P.). —The office of price administration took a step yesterday which officials expect to increase the retail sup-

plies of blended whisky, gin and

cordials. The move, however, means that those things will cost more money. The OPA made price adjustments to permit manufacturers of domestic distilled liquors to use the more

costly imported neutral spirits and

still make the same profits. The supplies of neutral spirits in this

country have been so short that

production has-been affected.

Dr. . Morgan “Recommends Closing of 26th, Belmont Swim Areas.

A recommendation from Dr. Her-

man G. Morgan, city health officer,

that the 26th st. beach on White river be closed immediately, is being investigated by the state health department. L. A. Pottenger, park superintendent, said the beach will remain open until the state department finishes its check-up of the water, which Dr. Morgan said is being polluted by sewage from a storm sewer at 56th st. “There was a cave-in of a. sewer north of the pumping staticn on N. Meridian st. used to divert sewage to the city disposal plant,” Nr. Morgan explained. “Because of the break, a large volumne of the sewage is being diverted into the 56th st. storm sewer and is being carried

Besides, the test may be taken at a time when no sewage is flowing through heavily. One hour’s ume may make a difference.” Dr. Morgan also recommended that the Belmont beach, expected
