‘potentialitfes in Her Hoosier home town... She, ‘gate crashes the big ‘time with such determined sweetness that Heflin; a fellow townsman ‘who has made. good in the
big city, finally succumbs. I turns out that Judy has talent, but, not _quite, enough. ’ The star (Marta Eggerth) of Van’s new musical show walks out in the kind of huff Hollywood delights to coneoct in order to give its stage-struck heroines their big opportunity. By this formula, Judy gets her chance. But that is as far as the formula goes; . Judy muffs the part and the frantic Heflin persuades the star to return, at the risk of busting up a ‘fine romance between himself and La Garland. A brand new climax has been hatched. '* All depends ‘upon Judy returning to the minor part of the chambermaid, even: after the Morning Bugle back: home has
| announced she is to be-the lead-
ing lady. What will she do, hey? Well, you know. I know. And M-G-M knows. already an hour old and the finish has to come soon. So she goes on and. gives the chambermaid’s role all she’s got. Virtue’s reward: Heflin marries her and makes-her a star in his very next production. Music, comely and the combination of Garland and Heflin give “Presenting Lily Mars” a nice lilt. Judy sings five songs, accompa-
.nied by Bob Crosby’s and T. Dor-
sey’s bands. Her white organdy and starch performance has the usual appeal. Heflin is fine in comedy and some of the comedy gets an enthusiastic response from the house. i It looks as though Garland and Heflin are slated to become one
| of M-G-M’s better musical com_edy teams.
® ” H ON THE WAY IN, a glance at Loew’s marquee ought to put you in the carefree mood to appreciate the screen fare which is billed as follows: ‘Presenting Lily Mars— After Midnight With Boston Blackie.” Nothing like a build-up.
