every city in the United States, it was learned today. Such prices—the same throughout a community for various classes of ' stores—were set in 130 cities last month. for hundreds of common food items. It was understood that OPA field directors have been instructed to do the same thing in 300 more communities within the next few weeks. - While congress has been attacking Brown’s subsidy-rollback program, designed to cut back the retail price of meats, coffee and butter © to last September levels, grocers’ associations have been denouncing the community-wide price system. Independent grocers claim that it is unfair to them inasmuch as lower pri for chain stores and super ftkets are widely “advertised” by : the OPA lists.

Estimate Reduction.

But the community price system is part of the roll back program to which OPA is committed. OPA officials estimate that the uniforin prices will reduce food costs 2 to 3 per cent. Argument over OPA policies took “the play” away from debate of recent days on the food supply prospects. But Rep. John Taber (R. N.| Y.), kept it current with a warning|* that unless OPA’s “long-haired professors” are dismissed immediately, starvation may stalk the]. United States next winter, . Senator Clyde Reed (R. Kas.), predicted that the United States soon may be looking to Mexico for beef and to Canada for grains. . Senator Alexander Wiley (R. Wis.), appealed for assignment of troops to Wisconsin canning factories to avoid a substantial loss - of the pea crop. War Food Administrator Chester C. Davis warned civilians that they must get accustomed to eating more cereals, beans and potatoes to compensate for eating less meat. “A Faint Cry” Extension of the community price system to all major cities is bound to bring more criticism from the grocery trade, but it probably will be only a faint cry compared with the denunciations of OPA ing aired in congress. A new facet was added to the congressional campaign against OPA yesterday by charges that the agency had assumed unwarranted jurisdiction . over profits. Brown reassured the special house comittee investigating executive agens that although profits as well as Tots come within’ OPA’s jurisdiction, profits will be regulated “only to prevent inflation.” Brown’s statement was an answer to charges by Committee Counsel Harold Allen that “secret files” subpenaed from David Ginsburg, former OPA general counsel, revealed the plan to fix prices on a basis of profits. Denies Charges §

. “The OPA has no program with respect to the reduction of profits as such,” Brown said. “No one can question the fact that maximum prices must be set with reference to costs. But it necessarily follows, since profits are merely the margin between prices and costs, that maximum prices must also be set with reference to their effects upon profits.” Committee members were not reassured, however. ' “Brown has made it plain,” said Rep. Hugh Peterson (D. Ga.) “that he believes he has the power to make any type of price regulation not specifically banned by law even though such regulation is based on individual profit rather than the | threat of inflation.”

ALLIED HEADQUARTERS, Australia, June 18 (U. P.).—The third straight heavy Japanese attack on allied strongpoints deep in mountainous New Guinea and a raid by Liberators on the Ceram island oil port of Boela were reported in a communique today. Forty enemy planes—18 bombers escorted by 22 single-seater fighters —bombed the villages of Benabena, Asoloka and Atsura approximately 90 miles northwest of Japanese-held Lae but a spokesman said the blowing up of four native huts was the only damage. The communique offered no explanation for the close Japanese attention to this area, which was known to contain landing strips. Much of the wild interior country is unexplored. The Liberators, hitting Boela the first time since November, started fires that sent smoke billowing 3000 feet above the port, a pipeline terminus in pre-war days.

ICKES REPORTS WAY TO INCREASE FOOD

WASHINGTON, June 18 (U. P). —Enough food to supply 10,000,000 persons for a year can be added to the American output in the next five years by maximum utilization of agencies within the interior department, Secretary Harold L. Ickes contends. In an 87-page letter to Secretary of Agriculture Claude R. Wickard, Ickes outlined a five-year plan calling for everything from extending irrigation projects to utilizing the meat of wild. horses dnd game animals.
