By HARRY GRAYSON - NEA Sports Editor
NEW YORK, June ’s;—A success story is always good reading, se here’s one about lovely Gloria Nord and “Skating Vanities,” the musical on wheels. It would be aptly entitled, “Gloria Goes Home,” for -|it was four years ago that Harold Steinman, first saw Gloria Nordskog in a roller-skating exhibition in Hollywood, where she grew up and attended Miss Long’s Professional School Here was Sonja Henie on wheels. Greco Refused Permission to Serap for Title
By JACK CUDDY United Press Staff Correspondent NEW YORK, June 17.—Another tempest in a pugilistic tea pot has blown an excellent service boxer out of competition—Pvt. Johnny " QGreco of the Canadian army, who was moving rapidly toward the lightweight championship. . Because of eriticism that followed Greco's 10-round bout with Terry ve at Montreal May 8, Cana-|5 defense headquarters at Ottawa said yesterday that Greco had been refused permission to go through with his non-title bout : against. lightweight champion Bob Montgomery on June 25 at New York's Yankee stadium, An Ottawa spokesman indicated 20-year-old Greco would do no more professional boxing for the “duration. Boxing must take the rap for the Canadian army’s action, just as it took the rap when U. S. Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson ordered cancellation of the Joe Louis-Billy Conn heavyweight title tilt last September. However, in neither case did men connected with boxing cause the sparks that actually touched off the explosions.
Small Gate Reason
We were in Montreal for the Greco-Young fight in May. Actual cause of criticism was the unexpectedly small gate of approximately $19,000 at the Forum. Lt. Col. Arthur G. White of the Canadian army, who had charge of promoting the bout, expected a gate of more than $50,000. Accordingly, he promoted in . big-time fashion. ne Terry Young of New York, best available opponent at the time, was
homer as the Giants whipped the Dodgers, 3-2. Albie Glossop’s scat-ter-arm throw to first with Mickey ‘Witek on third produced the other New York run. St. Louis set southpaw Howie Pollet up with a one-run lead, but the Reds knocked him off for the tying run in the fifth inning and went on to win, 4-1, in the eleventh, when Eddie Miller doubled two runners home and Johnny Vander Meer followed with a run-scoring single. Vander Meer sprinkled five hits over the route for his sixth pitching triumph. 8i Johnson unfurled a three-hit-ter as the Philadelphia Phillies shut out the Boston Braves, 2-0. Jim Tobin granted 12 hits, but the only scores were when Jimmy Wasdell
and Tom Livingston drove runners in with singles in. the third and].
sixth, : : Pirates Trounce Cubs
The first four Pittsburgh batters to face Hi Bithorn hit safcly for three runs as the Pirates went on to a 5-2 victory over the Chicago Cubs. Hank Gornicki scored his second victory with a nine-hit pitching performance. The Washington Senators scored an 8-3 triumph over the New York Yankees, which cut the Yank lead to three games in the American league. Five runs in the eighth inning chased southpaw Tiuamy Byrne to the showers in favor of Jim Turner, who gave up two more. Babe Barna, outfielder recently acquired from the Giants, nade an auspicious debut with the Boston Red Sox by starting a ninth-inning rally and scoring the run that beat the Philadelphia Athletics, 3-2. Yank Terry gave up seven hits in winning. White Sox Lose Again The Chicago White Sox stretched their losing streak to five straight by dropping the first game of a double-header with St. Louis, 5-2, but snapped the streak in the finale with a 9-0 victory. Denny Galehouse and George Caster teamed to let Chicago down with nine hits in the opener. Orval Grove was the winning White Sox pitcher in the nightcap, permitting 10 hits.

But now the entire company—
principals, chorus and all—is head-
ed for Hollywood to make a picture in technicolor, “Pin Up Girl.” It is i a roller-skating story. Betty Grable is starring, but Gloria Nord: has the &
skating lead and a speaking part. Miss Nord Cute
Miss Nord, 20, a natural redhead and as nice as she is cute, has done short subjects in Hollywood, could have had more important roles before, but insisted upon “Skating Vanities” being produced as a unit.
Miss Nord stresses that it is more difficult to skate on rollers than on ice, and that there is no better exercise. It is harder to spin on rollers. When you jump eight wheels must strike the surface at the same time. The jumper on ice has only two blades with which to contend.
Producer Steinman deadened the noise of roller skates in “Skating Vanities” with a masonite floor and precision bearings. Miss Nord asserts that there is a rhythm to rol-ler-skating routines that you can't get on ice. Roller-skating routines have the advantage of tap dancing, etc., she points out. “Skating Vanities” played to 1,000,000 people on two tours which took the show to 20 cities, including New York and Madison Square Garden. Miss Nord is the first

hibition on a stage, got $1,000 a week on Broadway. This little lady means much to the nation’s 15,000,000 roller-skaters. There are 4000 arena roller rinks in the country to less than 200 ice rinks, 20 roller-skaters for every ice-skater. Once the sport of roughnecks, roller-skating has been taken up by the best people of all ages. And now Gloria Nord and “Skating Vanities” are dressing it up, giving it a tremendous lift in pictures.

paid well. Lt. Benny Leonard, former lightweight champion was imBored to referee the main bout. Pete Sanstol of the U. S. army i imported to referee the semifinal. The bout was widely pub‘licized, and it was an excellent show, but it drew only about $19,000. We don't know what Greco was paid, but the Canadian army wound up with slightly more than $3000.
. Because the Canadian army received only this comparatively small amount, some of the Canadian sports writers began criticizing the promotion. Unfortunately a behind-the-scenes wrangle over Greco's contract added fuel to the flames. The New York brothers, Abe and Murray Elkins, disputed with Pete Audette of Montreal over the right to cut Greco’s purse.
Can’t Understand
We still are unable to under-|
stand the original criticism of the Canadian army’s $3000 take. Lt, Col. White emphasized before the bout that the army was not primarily interested in making money for its athletic fund. It was promoting the bout (1) to stimulate recruiting (2) to help civilian and service morale, and (3) to help good-will between Canada and the United States.
Vet to Decide Fate of Horse
NEW YORK, June 17 )U. P).— A veterinarian representing the insurers, Lloyd of London, was scheduled to decide today on the life or death of Riverland, Louisia Farm's 5-year-old gelding, who fractured his hip when he fell as the field ' (broke from the barrier at Aqueduet in the Carter handicap last Saturday. Trainer Moody Jolley ahandoned hope for Riverland, now at Belmont Pork yesterday, saying, “I don’t see - how he can be saved.” Reportedly insured for $50,000, Riverland, a stout-hearted handi- ’ cap star, rose from comparative obscurity last September to outrun Whilaway and Alsab with in five days. Subsequently he won the Riggs, Westchester, Dixie and Ex- . eelsior handicaps, among other, to earn $94,000.

Did Mexican Take a Dive?
LOS ANGELES, June 17 (U. P.). —Geoge Parnassus, manager of Mexican Lightweight Champion
Juan Zurita, was subpenaed by the
state athletic commission today to explain his charges that his fighter lost a 10-round decision to Luther “Slugger” White Tuesday night on a “fix. ”» Although most ringsiders trailed with Referee Mushy Callahan and the two - judges, Parnassus accused commissioners and officials of collusion against Zurita. “My fighter was fouled in every round and not once did Callahan take away any points from White or talk to the judges about it. “I knew I was going to get the business last Friday when I found out who was going to referee the fight. There's a rule on the books
‘Ithat says the officials can’t be
named before the eve of the fight. But by Friday a lot of guys knew who was going to referee. “If I have to, I'll take this thing right to the governor.” White, Maryland's version of the world champion, won the nod by his showing in the final round after a stiff battle all the way. Parnassus was to appear before commissioners Wednesday.

. 22, twisted his knee when he made the mistake of not going all the way through with a slide into second base against the Yankees. Sent to Left Field
When Stephens returned to the wars, Sewell didn’t want to run the Tisk of having his knee bumped before it had completely healed. To get his big bat into the thick of things, he sent the youngster to left field. “In five games there, he was as good/ an outfielder as I ever saw,” relates Sewell. “He made one of the best catches I ever saw, threw out three runners at the plate.” Stephens stands 5 feet, 11, weighs 185. He is a power righthand hitter at shortstop, batted in 82 runs in his freshman year, hasn't a care in the world.
Lovelock Mark Beaten
Jack Lovelock’s 3:47.8 for 1500 méters was considered remarkable until Gunder Hagg came along with his 3:45.8, which is his best time, Maintaining that pace, he would do the mile in 4:03.8. Like Count Fleet, however, Gunder the Wonder is a sprinter who can go a route. Little Sidney Wooderson’s mile mark went from 4:05.4 to 4:04.6. Archie San Romani ran 2000 meters in 5:16.8 in Helsinki on a tour in 1987. The Swift Swede shaved it to 5:11.8. Henry Kalarne of Sweden did 3000 meters in 8:09.0. Haag cut it to 8:01.2. It was Kalarne who got Haag to running, by the way. Miklos Szabo, the Hungarian, negotiated two miles in 8:56.0. Haag reduced that one to 8:47.8. Laury . Lehtinen, the Finn, turned in a 13:5068 three-mile at the Los Angeles olympic games in '32. Haag whacked that one to 13:32.4. Taisto Maki’s 5000-meter record of 14:08.8 was reduced to 13:58.2. Gunder Haag comes well recommended. To Be Ready
Cecil Wilhelm expected Devil's Thumb, winner of five stakes at Saratoga last August, to be ready “for the Arlington classic July 24. Trainer Wilhelm professes to believe that William E.
