“By FREDERICK Cc. OTHMAN United Press Hollywood Correspondent "HOLLYWOOD, June 16 (U. P.).— Last night we took, a: stroll’ down Hollywood blvd. What's happened
to this most famous street in the
world you'd never imagine, We're a loyal Hollywoodian and we hate to say it, but truth is truth, and Hollywood bivd. is peppered with dives designed to separate the furloughing soldier . from his cash. A few months back the joints were ‘vacant stores.
Now the signs say they're night ‘clubs, Continuous entertainment.

There are so many saloons that the businessmen’s association has galled upon the state board of ualization to forbid any more. The businessmen fear that if the trend confinues, their avenue may turn into a west coast Bowery. Pedestrians of a week-end consist mostly of soldiers, sailors and their The night clubs are almost all e, each consisting of a bar, with ~@" singer and a three-piece band sitting back among the liquor bottles. The singer is sour; so is the band, Out front at tables about a foot and a half in diameter sit the fighting men, trying to enjoy themselves, The army may be unhappy about its soldiers being cheated, but it can’t complain about them getting drunk. A highball in a Hollywood club contains barely enough liquor to flavor the water.
There Are. Other Places
A soldier having a hight. in Hollywood doesn’t have to patronize a saloon. There are all kinds of places in which to spend his money, from the Grauman’s Chinese theater, to 2 photo gallery where he can have his picture takem with his aris arou:- . Hedy Lamarr. . Or almost. e soldier sits on a peach-col-ored love seat, as in Miss Lamarr’s boudoir. The photographer seats a dummy of Miss Lamarr, in a lowcut evening gown, ‘beside him, drapes its arms around him and squeezes the bulb. The results must be as desired. Business is booming. The fun-seeking soldier can buy spaghetti in three Italian emporiums in as many blocks, orange juice in stalls every few feet, fish and chips, Indian jewelry (made in Hollywood), souvenir walnuts and preserved figs to send home, The catch-penny enterprises on the boulevard and its ide streets run into the dozens.

and Ambassador and Suriday at the Belmont.’ The profits from the distribution of “Forever and a Day” in the United States have been donated to the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis. So, for that reason alone, if not for the one of seeing a splendid production, you should make it your business to see this picture. . Among the stars who lent a hand 'to make this movie possible are Brian Aherne, Robert Cummings, Anna Lee, C. Aubrey Ian Hunter, Ida Lupino, Jessie Matthews, Claude Rains, Roland Young, Herbert Marshall, Ray Milland, Elsa Lanchester, Edward Everett Horton, Wendy Barrie, Merle Oberon, Donald Crisp, Sir Cedric Hardwicke, Kent Smith, Anna Neagle and Charles Laughton. It’s difficult to single out any performance as outstanding over the others: But particularly brilliant are Ida Lupino in her portrayal of a flighty ‘maid, Brian Aherne in the role of the disowned son and Charles Laughton as a tipsy butler. Don’t miss it. » » ” ANY WALT DISNEY contribution to the cinema, no matter how small a cartoon, is an event. So when he comes up with a fulllength musical technicolor feature like “Saludos Amigos” the event must be noted. This is the cartoon ‘in which Donald Duck goes South Amerjoan in a big way, In his own manner, the duck is probably one of ‘the best good ~ will ambassadors we have among the Latin-American ‘countries. -In “Saludos Amigos” you will meet Joe oe 5 Carioca, the Brazilian jitterDonald Dusk 5d who takes Donald on a tour of the hot spots and introduces him to the.South American dance, the samba; your old friend Goofy, who turns up as a “gaucho,” and Pedro, the baby mail plane, who braves all to take the mail over the highest ‘peak of the Andes. You'll hear that new hit tune, “Brazil,” in Hs. most captivating form. “Saludos Amigos” opens tomorrow at the Granada and Zaring and Sunday at the Belmont.
