CANNED WATER USED BY SHIP SURVIVORS

WASHINGTON, June 11 (U. P.) +—Canned water was among new ways to ease the sufferings of torpedo victims in the submarinehaunted ship lanes: described today by two Canadian naval surgeons. Surgeon Capt. Archie McCallum, director of medical service in the Royal Canadian navy, and Surgeon Cmdr. Charles H. Best, co-discov-erer of insulin, disclosed that canned water is now a standard part of the equipment of life rafts and has proven highly effective in

helping shipwrecked seamen to survive until rescued. : ro Water ‘is very difficult to can, the surgeons explained, and: a formula was discovered only after] 500 experiments. Another innovation adopted by the Canadian navy, they said, is. a life, jacket which covers the groin and protects the abdomen. Fitted to the jacket is a yellow cap with a light which flashes intermittently.
