HOLDS OFFICE FIVE - MONTHS, RESIGNS
"After only five months in office a -newly-elected - Republican. official has resigned - because of what he described as discord in the party. ‘Pred W. Phelps, elected justice of peace of Lawrence township, resigned in a letter to County Clerk A. Jack Tilson, declaring that he hoped his resignation would. “eliminate the discord that my holding office seems to have created.” Mr. Phelps: didn’t elaborate on the details of what the “discord”
was, .but it was learned that another justice of peace had complained something about encroachment upon his court business. Under the law county commissioners .have the authority to fill the vacancy if any appointment is made in the post. For several years Lawrence township got along without a justice of peace.

By WILLIAM B. ZIFF Written for. the United Press WASHINGTON, June 11.—The united: nations are getting set for the kill. And they are serving notice on the axis that if Germany wants to play rough, we will close in on her relentlessly with gas or any other weapon she chooses to unleash. That is the meaning of the twin statements just Roosevelt and Prime Minister Winston Churchill. Confidential reports received from Germany indicate a rapidly deterlorating position. The transport situation is particularly bad. German morale would seem to be perilously close to going up in smoke due to the vertical pressure exerted by incessant air raids. Though the German wehrmacht is still dangerously powerful, it is clear that the German nation is cracking under the strain. .The great German army is in a desperate position and can pull out only by some swift, unexpected and decisive blow from which our forces cannot quickly recover.
There is still one gredt weapon left in the German arsenal, on
issued by President
William B. Ziff, well-known writer on aviation subjects, believes that if Germany resorts to the use of gas, the united nations can end the war in Europe in 30 days. In the accompanying article, written for the United Press, he also says that there will be no full-dress invasion of Europe this year, despite allied air superiority and the weakening of German morale.

which our military men are keeping a wary eye—gas. The airplane has given the chemical weapon a power it never had before. If the Germans possess the air power to disseminate gas, ‘they can very well attempt a blow to set us back on our heels. The blow would be aimed not against Russia, but England, and then would be turned against the Muscovites.
Nazis ‘Experienced’
It is agreed by such authorities on chemical warfare as our own
Brig. Gen. Alden Waitt that when gas is used it must be used in overwhelming amounts to gain a decision quickly. That is what we must be prepared for. The Germans have already, according to documented reports -in the hands of the Polish and Dutch governments in exile, conducted horrible experiments on the killing power of gases, and have used the living bodies of many thousands of unfortunate civilians for this -purpose. But we have the cards. in our hands if Germany decides to get rough. Unless she can win by an unexpected, terrifically developed assault, her defeat is inevitable. Our danger is that we ‘may be caught unawares. If we get set for chemical warfare, thé -instruments in our hands would allow us to end the war in Europe within 30 days.

Official reports said Soviet bombers followed up two nights of mass raids on Nazi airdromés with attacks last night on military trains and supply dumps near Lisichansk in the Ukraine, causing big fires and explosions.

Island Is First to Give in to Bombing Attack, Author-"¥ ities Note.
WASHINGTON, June 11 (U. P.). —The fall of Pantelleria was described by American ‘military experts today as the first instance wherein an island has capituated to aerial bombardment—and they were weighing the significance accordingly. Those who believe the axis can be bombed into submission by air power hailed the collapse of Pantelleria as important support for their theories. : It was noteworthy the island's surrender came less than a day after Maj. Gen. Ira C. Eaker, commanding U. S. army air forces in Britain, said mounting. allied air power would permit the test to be" made this summer whether bombing alone could win a war, and it was strong substantiation for the

long-held theories of Lt. Gen. Carl A. Spaatz, American airman who is deputy commander of allied gir forces in northwest Africa. " However, it was admitted that Pantelleria’s significance was sugi gestive rather than conclusive, Few were ready to conclude that because a small island, isolated from supplies and support, could be bombed into submission, it necessarily followed that a continent could be.

These .are the fears which agitate our political leaders as they sense what may be an impending collapse of the European end of the axis. In addition to getting the AngloAmerican nations ready for a possible truimph of quick and unexpected dimensions, Mr. Roosevelt and Churchill are waging deft psychological war against the axis. The German leaders have threatened that if they are to go down, they will drag the whole world into ruin with them. Thess threats are taken seriously by the AngloAmerican leaders—hence the fear of a last desperate use of the chemical weapon.

No Invasion Yet 1
The following facts appear clear today as a result of recent developments: : 1. The best informed opinion is that the Germans will use gas before resigning themselves to defeat. 2. An effort will be made by the allies to take Crete, Sardinia, and possibly Sicily, in’ order to clear the Mediterranean routes, but there will be no full-dress invasion of the continent this year. There is likely to be a series of exploratory raids in force, designed to gain landing experience and to keep the German nerves on edge. y 3. German morale, ‘aided by the pressure of relentless: overhead, pounding, may be ready to collapse. Washington is optimistic on this’ score—perhaps too much so. 4. Mr. Churchill makes a clear bid for an anglo-American understanding on world commerce as well as military alliance, to continue into the post-war period. | BALGONY EMPIRE
X-Rays the Limping Leg of Europe's Axis
The war has cost Italy much. It is a land today of want and weariness and many widows. Africa is: lost. German protection is ebbing. But does that ‘mean that Italy will quit as soon as foreign troops swarm ashore upon her soil—as soon they will?
Reynolds and Eleanor Packard, celebrated foreign correspondents, were in Italy and with Italian fo/:es from the time of the Ethiopian grab until only a few months ago. In their best-selling book, "Balcony Bmpire," they report with completeness and brilliance the strength and the spirit of Fascist Italy at war, reveal what we may expect to encounter when we drive that war all the way home. "Balcony Empire” now is presented as a daily serial. Look for the first
