CROP DECLINES

1. Country and Allies to Get Full Supply Despite Slight Drop.

CHICAGO, June 10 (U. P.).— Government agricultural officials said last night that America’s 1943

wheat crop will be less than last]

year, but still will exceed the 10year average yield. Market sources agreed that despite the slight drop below government production estimates, the na-

tion will have sufficient wheat for?

civilian and military needs, as well as for lend-lease commitments. Transportation and storage facilities were geared to distribute the new wheat crop with all possible speed to meet wartime food demands. As early loads of winter wheat. one of the nation's most needed {wartime crops, began to trickle into idwest markets, grain men were determined that the 511,855,000bushel crop will not become clogged at terminal points, as Occurred some places last year.

) U. P. Survey Taken

' A United Press survey of Midwestern food production showed: "1. An acute’ farm labor shortage will not deter harvesting whent. " Most states have mobilized their available help in advance to harvest the crop. Kansas, largest producer of winter wheat in the nation, is certain that available labor can - bring in its estimated crop of 159,000,000 bushels. On the whole, _ the crop is smaller—more than about one-fourth under last year’s record yield—thereby requiring less manpower for the harvest. 2, If the grain begins to tie up at terminal points, a permit system, which will turn over required box cars for wheat movement, will be put into effect in many places. 3. Railroads have promised to speed up all wheat movement to avoid congestion. 4. Agricultural agents in many states reported that recent floods destroyed many acres of low land wheat. Lack Machinery 5. Midwestern . farmers asserted “that lack of machinery and parts was slowing down their work. Machines and parts were being shared by farmers within communities, usually on a reciprocal basis. 6. Last year’s record crop totaled _ 703,000,000 bushels. Although this year’s estimated yield of 511,855,000 , bushels is more than one-fourth 4 less than 1942, it still is one-fifth larger than the 10-year average yield for the entire nation. 7. The storage situation in the Midwest was not nearly so acute as last year. At Kansas City, the world’s largest winier wheat market, there will be only 24,000,000 bushels "yof all grain in public elevators—a "noticeable drop from the 38,750,000 bushels a year ago.

Galvin Predicts

8. Crop statistician James Galvin of James E. Bennett & Co., Chicago, also forecast a drop in the spring wheat crop. He predicted a yield of 215,000,000 bushels as compared with 278,084,000 bushels last year. Galvin predicted the rye crop would

The annual rose open house at Hillsdale Nurseries will be dedicated Sunday to the June war ‘bond campaign sponsored by Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts and Campfire Girls, Alex -Tuschinsky, owner, has announced. Members of the three youth groups will staff war bond booths in RE ; the gardens. ; . There will be Alex Tuschinsky no solicitations, however. One hundred varieties of roses will be on display, and over 5000 visitors are expected this year. This is the seventh year the gardens have been opened to the public. Formerly a rose queen was crowned during the festival, hut because of the war, this is not being done this year. The 1942 queen was Miss Ruth Rechtenwall, 809 W. Hampton dr. It also has been traditional for the Girl and Boy Scouts and Campfire Girls to sponsor a pageant during the festival. Since the open house this year occurs during the first week of their war bond campaign, Mr. Tuschinsky is having bond booths set up for them in the gardens, instead. The June war bond quota is $4,538,600.

FIRE DEFENSE TOPIC FOR OCD MEETING

A talk on “Fire Defense” will be given by Mrs. Scott Clifford at a meeting of district 40, emergency medical service, at 7:30. p. m. today in St. Joan of Arc: + §ehool, followed by first aid practice: District 40 is conducting a membership campaign within the district boundaries, Capitol and Keystone on the west and east, 34th and 46th sts. on the south and north.

be slightly less than government estimates and said that the acreage seeded to corn would be smaller than the march intentions to plant 96,827,000 acres. Government officials and market experts agreed there would be plenty of bread for American workers, fighters and for her allies.

FOR TAX DEMAND

Sales vs. Spending Levies 3 To Be Issue When Debate Starts.

WASHINGTON, June 10 (U. P). —A tax fight: which some house members say may dwarf even the pay-as-you-go dispute is shaping up over the various proposals for meeting President Roosevelt's unprecedented demand for at least $16,000,000,000 in additional revenue this year. The big fight is expected to be between the treasury, which favors a spending tax, and house members,
