WAR BOND STAFFS MERGED IN STATE
The dissolution of Indiana’s per-
manent war financing set-up of the
war savings staff and the victory fund committee was announced today by Eugene C. Pulliam, state chairman. The functions of the two are now merged in a new organization, the war finance committee. Scheduled to increase the effectiveness of bond sales, it is experted to smooth ‘operational difficulties in treasury drives by recognizing states as the logical sales promotional unit.
“This plan will streamline and] |
amplify our bond sales operation,” said Mr. Pulliam. “It will give us a ' single committee with a state authority and concentration on individual bond sales.”

WESTERN PICTURES probably serve two major functions at “the present time. The first is to partly fill an insatiable desire in the hearts of western fans for more of the same, and the second to take the minds of war-weary movie patrons off the gruelling grind of winning the battle with the axis. At any rate westerns are here to stay. This week two “high class” western films hit the neighbor-
hood movie houses. As a rule, most westerns are rather sloppily put together, and the process is aggravated by a good bit of ham and corn. But today vou can see “The Desperados,” with Randolph Scott, Glenn Ford and Claire Trevor, at the St. Clair, Uptown and Strand and . “Northwest Rangers,” which SR is shown in Indianapolis f or Claire Trevor the first time, at the Fountain Square.
“The Desperados” will be shown Saturday at the Fountain Square and Sunday at the Belmont and Ambassacior,
This picture nas a distinctive air of plausibility, and the performances of the cast make the characters appear authentic. In the great tradition, the moviegoer is presented with an upright but dull sheriff (Randolph’ Scott), the dance hall queen (Claire Trevor), the dashing hero whom everyone believes to be an outlaw (Glenn Ford), the blushing sweet little damsel (Evelyn Keyes), the villain whom everyone believes to be an. upright citizen (Porter Hall) and the comic relief (Edgar Buchanan). “Northwest Rangers” is the tale of two brothers, one of whom becomes a mounted policeman (William Lundigan) and the other who turns gambler (James Craig). The love interest is supplied by Patricia Dane in the role of a dance hall singer. The story takes several unusual twists.

Device Takes Salt From Seawater
By Science Service WASHINGTON, June. -- Thirsty men on life rafts will be able to produce safe drinking
water from the sea, thanks to a new method perfected by the Naval medical research institute at Bethesda, Md., and announced officially by the navy. Developed primarily for use on rubber life rafts carried on aircraft, the new method utilizes two chemical compounds, the composi=tion of which is not revealed. These chemicals: are compressed into bars the size of a cake of soap. Four plastic ‘bags, each a quart in capacity, are needed to perform the chemical reactions that remove salt and make sea water drinkable. | The navy credits the discovery of the process to Lt. (jg) Claire R. Spealman and Lt. William V. Consolazio, both hospital volunteer specialists, U. S. naval reserve.
HOOSIER RESCUED NEAR FRENCH COAST
LONDON, June 9 (U. P.).—Pilot Officer R. W. Thatcher, of Rushville, Ind., a Spitfire pilot, was rescued within sight of the northwest coast of France recently, when he bailed out after his plane was damaged by flak, the air ministry revealed today. Thatcher and another Spitfire pilot, both members of a Canadian squadron, had damaged three locomotives in northern France and were leaving for home when Yhatcher’s motor was damaged. He headed out to sea and after a few miles was forced to jump. He was picked up by a Walrus amphibian after a few hours’ search.

WHITE PLAINS, N. Y., June 9 (U. P.).—Mrs. Hannah Williams Dempsey. has her round in court today, the first since she collapsed when her hushand, former heavyweight champion Jack Dempsey, began producing witnesses who linked her with two other members of the boxing world. Both Dempsey, a lieutenant commander in the coast guard, and his wife, a former Broadway singer, are seeking divorces, each charging the other with misconduct. The trial
started two weeks ago but has been retarded by several postponements. Mrs. Dempsey suffered a “com=plete nervous collapse” at the end of the first day’s activities and since has been recuperating.
